Even the experts at the shelter couldn’t stop the poor little thing from crying and crying. And the kitten was in generally good health, too.

What was wrong? And how could they get the tiny tyke to settle down?

Well, maybe they just needed someone with a magic touch … and we all know that children have magic in their fingers!

Kelli Gross is an avid rescuer and foster mother who has taken in over 100 kittens, so she’s no stranger to felines in distress.

So when she heard about Ariel, she quickly drove to the shelter to pick her up. Another adorable kitten to save and foster!

She brought her 10-year-old son Zack with her, too … and it’s a good thing she did.

Because when Kelli and Zack arrived to pick up Ariel, they heard the frightened kitten crying. She was still distraught; nobody could get her to stop.

Then something amazing happened:

“…but when Zack picked her up, everything changed.

‘She was going crazy and wouldn’t settle down,” Kelli remembers.

Then Zack’s quiet voice and gentle touch convinced the little kitten that she was safe and everything was going to be alright.”

The 10-year-old boy’s magic touch was just the ticket. Ariel never made a sound after Zack picked her up, and stayed quiet the whole ride home. Said Kelli:

“He put a blanket down in his lap and bundled her up.

She was sound asleep and didn’t make a peep during the whole 30-minute car ride home.”

As it turns out, Zack’s connection with kittens extends beyond Ariel. He just seems to understand them, and they understand him.

“He has a routine of waking up and telling them good morning every day before school and then coming and kissing every single one goodnight before bed.

He makes sure that they all feel included.

He misses them when he’s away and they’re the first thing he says ‘Hi’ to when he gets home from anywhere.

He just makes it effortless and you can tell that it’s actually ingrained into his heart.”

Maybe this is all because innocence is drawn to innocence … innocent children have an innate connection to innocent animals.

But then he heard a knock at his back door and when he got up to open it, he got a very big surprise:

He just caught sight of a small boy running away and there, sitting just outside his door, was a cardboard box with a handwritten note attached.

The box was also making sounds, and it was obvious something was inside and desperately trying to get out!

So, the janitor knelt down and read the note, which was quite heart-wrenching in and of itself:

“Sorry it didn’t have a home, and it was cold so were going to give it to you.

Please do let it go find it a new home. Thank you.”

What had the boy left in care of the janitor? And what if the poor animal inside wasn’t very happy about being locked up in a tight, dark little space?

Well, the noises coming from the box broke the ice; he just had to open it…

And there, sitting curled up inside a blanket, was a terrified little puppy!

The boy had even left a few slices of meat for the scared pooch, and he’d poked holes in the box so the poor thing could breathe. Pretty good thinking for such a young child!

But the janitor couldn’t care for the homeless pup, so he handed it over to one of the teachers; she was happy to take the puppy home, and she and her son named him Snowflake.

They really loved Snowflake! However, they couldn’t give the dog the permanent home he needed, so the teacher contacted Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue.

She hoped the organization would be able to find a loving, fur-ever home for little Snowflake. But even after all this, the tiny pup really loved her cardboard box and didn’t want to leave it!

Founder and Director of Detroit Pet Crew Dog Rescue Theresa Sumpter said:

“She really likes the box—I don’t know why.

“She likes to sit in the box, she likes to lie in the box, she likes her toys in the box.”

But little by little, Snowflake emerged from her cocoon and the team put her up for adoption … boy, they didn’t have long to wait, either!

It only took one day for someone to come forward and adopt the lovable pup!

Finally, Snowflake has her permanent home and though she had to bounce around a bit, she should lead a very happy and carefree life.

And all thanks to a little boy who, though he couldn’t care for the dog himself, knew he had to approach a grown-up if Snowflake was going to have a chance!

Very often, they’re protectors, even when we don’t realize they’re desperately trying to keep us safe.

And while it’s certainly true that dogs are often headliners in such stories, let’s not forget out furry feline friends, who have been known to do some miraculous things for their human owners.

This is the story of one such kitty: her name is Midnight and she belongs to Roy and Bernita Rogers of Kansas City, Missouri, who have always wanted a big family.

Unfortunately, Bernita suffered through three premature births and her dream of a large family was rapidly disappearing.

In lieu of the baby she’d always wanted, Bernita decided to adopt a stray cat; he was affectionate and attentive, and Bernita named him “Midnight” for obvious reasons.

Midnight must’ve been a good luck charm, though, because not long after the cat arrived, Bernita got pregnant again.

And this time, she gave birth to a happy and healthy daughter named Stacey. Finally!

As you might expect, the adoring couple were extremely protective of their new family member and as Roy said:

“We were determined that nothing would ever happen to the baby.“

That included setting up a baby monitor to make sure little Stacey was always okay. These two parents were hell-bent on ensuring their baby’s health!

But despite all their best efforts, poor Stacey came down with a mysterious illness. The doctors weren’t too worried, though; they told Bernita that her daughter just had a cold.

So, Bernita took Stacey home and put her to bed. However, she was still worried, so she kept the baby monitor on.

And that’s precisely the moment when Midnight started acting very strangely … he’d keep jumping onto Bernita’s lap and back down again, as if he wanted something.

Then he ran upstairs to Stacey’s bedroom and started making horrible yowling noises! Bernita heard them through the baby monitor and couldn’t imagine what Midnight was up to.

“It was this screech-wail-scream-cry. It was frightening enough that I jumped out of the chair and ran upstairs.“

It was a darn good thing she did, too.

Because when she rushed into the baby’s bedroom, she found Stacey struggling and gasping for air; even her skin was turning blue!

Stacey had suffered a full respiratory failure and needed medical assistance immediately, so Bernita scooped her up and sped to the hospital, panic-stricken that she might lose a fourth child.

But thankfully, doctors were able to save little Stacey. And why?

Midnight, of course! The cat had known something was dreadfully wrong and did everything he could to alert mom and because of that, Stacey survived. Said Bernita:

“For whatever reason, we were given… a second chance by the help of a cat, to enjoy this child and watch her grow.”

Sure, Lassie is a legend but we can never forget our feline heroes!

Just ask 6-year-old Henrique Muraro.

His best friend is a lovable and extremely loyal little pup named Pipo, and their friendship is one that will endure forever. If you don’t believe that, just watch this:

Henrique is unfortunately handicapped and can’t move about easily; he needs a wheelchair to get around.

Obviously, this is very sad and hugely disappointing for a young boy, as they’re supposed to be running around outside. But Henrique’s doctor had an idea:

He suggested Henrique get a dog, which would encourage him to move around more and refine those ailing motor skills.

That’s when Pipo came into the courageous boy’s life and everything immediately got better. Said Rodrigo, Henrique’s older brother:

One day my father’s cousin brought over Pipo.

They became friends immediately and have been inseparable ever since. They spend all day together playing.“

The only time they must be separated is when Henrique goes to school. Poor Pipo must wait and wait … but when that bus pulls up, the joyful pooch races out to greet his favorite person in the world.

And it’s just the most adorable thing you’ll ever see.

Added Rodrigo:

“Pipo started doing this all on his own.

He would always follow when my mother took Henrique to the bus [to] go to school, and then one day he just started running inside the bus when he saw it arrive.

Now he does it every day.“

It’s a daily routine that both Pipo and Henrique just love, as you can clearly see in the video above. Pipo may not be a trained service dog but he’s doing wonders for his best buddy!

Rodrigo says his brother’s “motor skills have improved a lot” and of course, he’s “much happier” thanks to amazing little Pipo.

If that’s not the perfect friendship, I don’t know what is.

Little did she realize that it wasn’t just a good idea…it was a decision that would change her family’s life.

The cat she eventually brought home was named Herbie and everyone loved him; he was gentle, friendly, and quiet.

But one night, he suddenly wasn’t so quiet.

Herbie kept jumping onto Janine’s bed and meowing, obviously distressed. He just refused to let Janine fall asleep.

Stranger still, after getting her attention, he’d leap back off the bed, head for the door, and look back at his mom. As if to say, “follow me!”

At first, Janine was just too tired to deal with Herbie’s antics. But his behavior was so out of the ordinary that she finally had to act.

As Janine remembers:

“I was so tired and I was like, all right, he’s just being a cat.

But something said this is not his personality. There’s something wrong.”

She had no idea how wrong until she finally got out of bed and followed Herbie.

The obviously frightened cat led Janine to her baby daughter’s room and when Janine opened the door, she was met with a terrifying sight:

There was her beloved baby girl, Isabella, her face covered by a blanket, making “smothering noises.”

Isabella must’ve rolled over and the blanket was suffocating her!

Amazingly enough, Herbie quickly leaped into the crib and started pawing at the offending blanket, trying to remove it from the baby’s face.

Had mom and Herbie not found her when they did, it’s very likely the baby wouldn’t have survived the night.

Ironically, Janine is a social worker who has actually written papers about the benefits of animal-assisted therapy, and now she’s seen more incredible Pet Power!

“He saved my daughter,” she said. “Herbie really is the hero.”

It isn’t only dogs that can save humans in life-or-death situations! Loyal pets are loyal pets, and that’s that.

But one curious deer that wandered into a family’s garden proved he isn’t scared of two things: little girls and cameras.

When Matthew Ray’s daughter went out to play in the backyard garden, she came across a surprise visitor.

A young deer had strolled in, likely looking for a few snacks, and probably not expecting to encounter any resistance.

The deer certainly didn’t expect a brave little toddler, who saw the deer and decided she wanted to make friends.

As soon as the deer sees the girl, he does what all deer do – his ears went up and he froze in place. But incredibly, he didn’t try to escape.

The adorable girl got a little closer and still, the tolerant creature didn’t run; he just bounced backward a few steps when the girl reached out to pet him.

The toddler came up again and again, the deer bounded away. But he never turned tail and sprinted out of the garden…he just wouldn’t let the girl touch him.

They were playing the cutest game of tag ever!

Matthew had his camera out and captured the whole thing, and that’s when he realized this young woodland creature really wasn’t afraid of humans at all.

A grown man with a camera didn’t faze the deer, either (just look how close he gets!), so the girl and the deer continued to play together.

Finally, however, the deer decided he’d had enough fun for one day; after grazing on some flowers, he wandered off and left dad with one amazing video.

Bet you don’t have deer this tame in YOUR backyard!

And some might assume that boxers would be especially bad for babies, as they have a reputation for being somewhat strong, aggressive types.

But then there are dogs, regardless of breed, that simply and instantly form an attachment to humans. And yes, that can even involve newborns.

As you might guess, such dogs make for perfect family pets. They aren’t merely loyal companions; they’re also fierce protectors.

Furthermore, they feel your pain, as evidenced by this amazingly emotional boxer who just couldn’t stand to hear a newborn infant cry.

One day, a new mother came into her brand new baby’s bedroom to check on the infant.

Then she noticed the family dog was lying underneath the baby’s crib; he seemed very happy and content there.

But then the infant began to cry and when the boxer heard the baby’s cries, he emerged with obvious concern etched on his face.

The loving dog sniffed at the crib and tried to figure out why the infant was in distress.

Then, as the child continued to cry, the emotional dog felt the baby’s pain and started crying right along with her!

He couldn’t figure out how to help the poor thing and he desperately looked to the mother for assistance, as if to say, “Come on, help!”

This is obviously a very protective pup; one that will put the family’s life before its own. Watch how precious – it will make your day!

Who wouldn’t want such an amazing pet in their home? There’s no doubt that they are going to be BFF’s!

Usually, both parents work, and sometimes they work different shifts and take care of the kids while the other one is at work.

Rujeana and her husband have two kids and she often wondered just what her husband did while she was gone at work…

This sparked an idea that ended up showing her what an amazing dad he truly is!

Thinking that she would place a hidden camera to catch him snoozing while the kids got into everything, she was shocked to see him having an absolute blast with the children.

And of course, he had no idea he was being filmed which made this video even more adorable.

One day, the kids were dancing around in the living room shaking pom-pom’s, just doing normal kid stuff, when Dad enters the room.

Dad, with a laundry basket under his arm, put it down and started dancing with his daughter.

The song, ‘Supernatural’ by Katy Perry must be his jam.

He showed off all of his fancy footwork before ending with an epic diva pose.

These are lucky kids to have such a fun, hands-on dad.

That’s right, both are homeless.

Both have survived hardship after hardship; both live in a constant state of fear and uncertainty; both knows what it’s like to feel unwanted.

Maybe that’s what prompted an 8-year-old Syrian refugee to do what he did…maybe he felt a sense of kinship with the downed animal.

Hüseyin el-Hasan was forced to relocate to Kilis, Turkey, so he’d already seen the dirty underbelly of life. He just couldn’t stand to see an innocent animal suffer, too.

One day, he watched in horror as a car struck a stray dog near his new home.

The poor thing was badly injured and obviously couldn’t move. Worse, there didn’t appear to be anyone around who was willing to help.

So, el-Hasan rushed inside and grabbed a blanket, all the time asking anyone who would listen to find assistance for the severely hurt animal.

Though assistance just wasn’t coming, this kind and dedicated 8-year-old refused to leave; he kept up his vigil next to the dying dog.

And absolutely everyone noticed.

Though the animal didn’t survive his injuries, news spread about el-Hasan’s great deed; even the deputy mayor, Cuma Özdemir, visited the boy and thanked him for his compassion.

The mayor said in a statement that the boy’s action were indicative of the best of humanity, and it proves that even immense hardship can’t destroy a good heart.

Even if the boy knew the dog wouldn’t survive, even if he had a sinking feeling that what he was doing was ultimately useless, he never left.

…but in retrospect, was it “useless” after all?

At the very least, he gave the dying animal love and kindness at the end of its life, two things the poor stray probably never had much of.

Now that isn’t useless at all, is it?

It’s brutal and severe and even adults should never, ever go hiking alone.

And when a defenseless 2-year-old is left outside in the elements, the poor innocent creature has almost zero chance of survival.

In short, getting lost or abandoned out there essentially means death.

So when a totally evil woman abandoned her small child on a frigid cold Siberian night, nobody thought the little tyke was going to survive.

Even if they could reach him, temperatures were plummeting to -12 degrees Celsius (about 10 degrees Fahrenheit).

Almost nobody could survive, much less an infant…right?

Well, nobody told one hero dog that the situation was hopeless.

This amazing canine spotted the freezing child and quickly approached; seeing the little boy in tremendous distress, the dog knew what it had to do:

He quickly wrapped himself around the 2-year-old, imparting a lot of body heat and warmth thanks to his fur.

And there he stayed for two whole days, protecting the boy with his body.

Incredibly, neighbors finally found the pair and though the child was suffering from hypothermia, he was definitely alive!

The callous mother of that little boy is now up on charges, too, and she deserves nothing less than a stiff punishment.

Dogs rescuing children in dire straits seems to be par for the course in Siberia, though.

Three years earlier, a 3-year-old girl named Karina got lost in the wilderness with her dog. That dog eventually returned after 9 days and led rescuers to Karina!

Both children are alive and well today, all thanks to man’s best friend.

Doesn’t get much more miraculous than this!
