But the instant she parked and got out of her car, her day got infinitely more interesting…

As Robin closed the door to her car and turned around, she heard faint cries coming from nearby. She looked around and spotted a soaked cardboard box sitting outside the shelter.

It had been really pouring for some time, and the box was so wet it looked about ready to disintegrate.

And yet, there was definitely something alive inside … perhaps more than one scared little creature was stuck in there!

Robin quickly called The Paws Squad rescue group president, Selena Marcum, for help. And Robin was right about the box; as soon as Selena touched that box, it basically fell apart.

But neither woman was prepared for what they found inside:

A new mamma cat and not one, not two, not three, but four newborn kittens shivering in the cold, and obviously hungry and scared.

Both the mother cat and her babies were all drenched to the skin and as One By One Animal Advocates volunteer Teresa Atkins said:

“They were snuggling with momma trying to stay warm.

It was raining that morning and we have no idea how long they had been there.”

The kittens quickly got dried off by some anxious and loving hands, and the staff at One By One Animal Advocates in Huntington, West Virginia took it from there.

The first step was to find a foster home for the new feline family and thankfully, every member of that family was checked by a vet and deemed healthy.

The kittens were later named Cheddar, Velveeta, and Panda, and the mom earned the adorable name of Gypsie.

To this day, Selena Marcum is very thankful for Robin Kilgore’s quick thinking:

“We’re very lucky that Robin happened to find them when she did.

I truly think they would’ve drowned in that box.”

Unfortunately, it isn’t uncommon for people to abandon animals at a shelter’s front door, but nobody should do so in a rainstorm, especially with four tiny newborn kittens!

Please, try to be responsible for the sake of our furry friends.
