Leaving our pets to go to work can be hard, especially when they look at you like they’re afraid you’ll never return.

Dogs can also suffer from separation anxiety that makes matters even worse.

Experts helped a couple, Nancy and Alex, to set up cameras in their home to see what their dog did all day while they were at work.

Not expecting anything exciting, except maybe a magazine or something else being chewed up because he was mad they were gone, they waited to see the footage.

And when they saw what their beloved dog, Max did all day, their hearts shattered.

The lonely pup cried the entire day. He would howl and wail; he was just miserable. He wouldn’t stop until he heard the turn of the doorknob and his family was home.

Professor Daniel Mills viewed the footage and gave Alex and Nancy some pointers to help little Max out.

He suggested that they give him toys to keep him company, for instance. Maybe that’d help.

He also suggested that they leave him for shorter periods of time, so he will better adjust to them being gone during the workweek.

Working with Max helped, though he still sometimes has a twang or two of separation anxiety. It’ll take some time but he’ll get better, we’re sure of it!

Watch the heartwrenching video of what dogs with separation anxiety do when left alone.

You can see why it broke their hearts…
