And usually, they are. But every once in a while, you hear a nightmare story … and the animal lover in you is outraged.

Such is the case here:

Bridget Woodson, a volunteer at an Indiana animal shelter, didn’t realize that shelter cats were disappearing at first.

Then one day, she was told to do something absolutely abominable:

She was told to kill a sick cat by putting it in the freezer!

And she wasn’t asked just once; she was asked twice. Thankfully, she refused both times, but this prompted her decision to quit.

Woodson initially was too afraid to go to the police because of retaliation from the management but luckily, her conscience got the better of her.

But this isn’t true at all.

The American Veterinary Association’s euthanasia guidelines specifically states that hypothermia is NOT an acceptable method.

The Spencer County Sheriff’s Office immediately opened an investigation into these allegations and horribly, they’re true.

The shelter did in fact kill multiple animals by freezing them alive!

This happens all the time, which is why shelters and other adoption centers take great care when they place homeless animals in new homes.

And of course, all pet owners should be patient, understanding, and respectful.

But sadly, this doesn’t always happen.

This is Odin, a gorgeous ragdoll cat who was very nearly put down because he was given an unfortunate label.

The owners believed Odin had an “attitude problem;” they thought he was just way too over-the-top energetic, so they brought him in to be euthanized.

Honestly, that was the reason. It didn’t have anything to do with an actual physical or mental issue; no, it was merely because Odin was a kitten.

Kittens will be kittens, right?

But this family just couldn’t deal with that fact and came to an incredibly harsh decision…the only question was, would the shelter agree?

Thankfully, the answer was a big resounding NO. As Odin’s new mom, Alaina, told The Dodo.

“The shelter was appalled at the idea of someone wanting to put down a kitten just for being a kitten.

Instead, the shelter took him at that time.”

At the time Odin came to the shelter, it was obvious he’d been neglected and possibly abused.

In fact, the reason why poor Odin now has only one eye is because he’d had a terrible infection that just couldn’t be healed.

Thankfully, the instant Alaina saw this beautiful animal with one eye who supposedly had an “attitude problem,” she fell in love.

Most are rescued while some are simply dropped off and forgotten.

And some, even less fortunate, are thrust into a caged world where they are treated as criminals without a trial.

A former owner can set them on this depressing path by simply stating the pet is “violent.”

For dogs, one “wild” snap and they’re quarantined without question.

The sad reality is these dogs supposedly acting violent or wild is not something they are born with.

Dogs sent to shelters because of biting, for instance, are less than 3 percent of all dogs in shelters.

And, experts will tell you these animals weren’t born with this trait – they learned it from their human owners.

Shelter workers know this, and they must handle and analyze each dog individually within the shelter.

Quarter was a dog sent to a Los Angeles area shelter because his owner claimed he was “aggressive” and biting “was an issue.” He was just “mean,” his owner said.

But the shelter workers were skeptical.

Quarter is a 5-year-old Chihuahua who looks more like a frightened kid than a snarling beast.

But, allegedly, on intake into the shelter he nipped a worker, so…

Slam the door! He was automatically quarantined.

Hey, you try sticking me into a cage after escaping a bonehead roommate and I might bite you, too.

Rules are rules, but shelter workers took care of Quarter. He was mostly isolated from staff and other animals, but he wasn’t deterred from showing his true colors.

He sailed through his quarantine of three weeks and despite being labeled “aggressive” forthwith, the shelter was able to place him at a rescue facility.

It was a chance for a new life, and Traci Jean Gallegos-Schuver at Little Diva Rescue recognized something about Quarter:

“He was a little fearful, but not once did he show any signs of aggression. Nothing,” she recalled.

The staff veterinarian agreed, and Gallegos-Schuver decided to foster her new charge in her own home. She gave him a new name, “Teddy,” and off they went.

Gallegos-Schuver and Teddy were getting along fine, and then a new test presented itself.

She had to be gone one night, and decided to leave Teddy with a friend.

Teddy passed without question. The friend reported Teddy displayed mannerisms of a dog who just wanted a caring and loving family.

His previous owner, shelter workers all agreed, wasn’t truthful about Teddy. Teddy proved over and again he wasn’t “aggressive.”

Gallegos-Schuver knew Teddy was ready for a family. Thankfully, an out-of-state couple was interested in adopting Teddy after finding his information online.

A cross-country flight from California to Virginia and Teddy arrived at his forever home.

The adopting couple reported Teddy was an instant hit, curling up right into the hearts of his new family.

All dogs deserve a chance to prove themselves outside the “care” of people who don’t necessarily treat them right or train them well.

A second chance for many of these pets can lead to a new life, and a lifetime of wonderful memories in a forever home.

The Amazing Acro-Cats prance through obstacle courses, jump through hoops, pound out tunes on musical instruments, and, well, get bored like all cats and occasionally wander off into the audience.

If you’re unfamiliar, Acro-Cats travel the United States fostering good relations between humans and cats.

They’ve been seen by millions on celebrity TV shows and at venues in major cities.

Above all else, the troupe shows people that cats can be trained and cared for using positive reinforcement methods.

“The team [of cats] themselves are all former rescues and strays,” Acro-Cats founder Samantha Martin recently told a publication.

What the public can easily miss about these once-lost Acro-Cats is the work they and their human staff do behind the scenes.

Behind the glitzy performances is an ongoing effort to save the lives of similar cats.

And they’ve saved more than 200 cats facing a bleak future, even death.

It all started in 2009, four years after Acro-Cats was founded, when Martin visited a high-kill shelter in Chicago looking to adopt a kitten.

She wanted to train a new member for the show.

As it turned out, it was a life-changing visit as she found not one, but 12 kittens on the night’s list for euthanasia. So she took them ALL home with her.

Kittens are usually highly adoptable, but shelters struggle to care for kittens just weeks old that need bottle feeding and around-the-clock support.

None of those first 12 kittens made the show, but they all got new homes through adoption. And they began a trend for the Acro-Cats troupe.

Martin and human staff members to date have fostered 209 kittens and counting.

Most of their foster cats are adopted out, though a few find their way into the traveling show among the 16 amazing performers.

Martin encourages cat lovers to start training their feline companions about 10 minutes daily with simple tricks and then give them plenty of time to just be cats.

Acro-Cats are also leading by example that fostering cats does save lives, which is the perfect heartwarming lesson for all animal lovers!
