The time really does go by in a flash, and that’s part of what makes each and every achievement so special.

For example, a baby’s first steps are a pretty monumental accomplishment, as is the first time they say those precious words: Mama or dada.

As you’ll see in this adorable video, mom is doing her best to get an adorable nine-month-old baby named Sam Diaz-Giovanini to say those precious words.

…but there’s somebody else who’s trying to steal her attention while she’s doing so.

That somebody else would be the family’s miniature Australian Shepherd named Patch.

Mom is tempting the baby with a treat to get Sam to say what she wants to hear, but Patch wants in on the deal, too!

Sam and Patch are adorably vying for mom’s attention, and it’s pretty tough to determine which one looks to be more excited.

As the video moves along, Sam gets a little frustrated when Patch beats him to the punch, and he playfully pushes the pooch away.

While it looks like the baby won this round, the family would upload an update to let everyone know that Patch got his as well.
