But, we may not realize that the tough stuff we’re going through creates changes in our animal’s lives.

For instance, we may not be exercising as much as we used to, and our dogs miss going for walks with us.

In a thousand different ways, our dogs pick up on our emotions and small changes to our personalities that we may not even realize we’re exhibiting.

When a young man named Byron sunk into a deep depression after his relationship fell apart, he didn’t realize how much it would affect his dog.

He tried to work through the sadness and grief but eventually, he hit rock-bottom and started to contemplate committing suicide.

Through it all, his pit bull was there at his side, anxiously hoping his master would recover.

Byron continued to care for him in a perfunctory manner but he was sadly still immersed in his depression.

One day, after a long bout of drinking, Byron decided that life just wasn’t worth living.

He knotted a thick rope into a hangman’s noose and decided it was time to end it all.

He left the rope upstairs and went downstairs to write a goodbye letter to his family. This was it; it was all over.

Byron fully expected to never see them – or his loving pet – again.

But when he went back upstairs, he was dismayed to find that his dog Geo, a very large Welsh Bull Mastiff, had the knotted rope in his mouth.

He demanded that Geo give the rope to him. But for the first time in the gentle giant’s life, a rumbling growl was the answer. Geo refused to relinquish the rope!

At first Byron thought Geo was just playing, and certainly this was no time for games.

But Geo was dead serious. He not only kept the noose away from Byron, but he proceeded to shred it until it was totally unusable!

Suddenly, Byron realized that Geo had somehow realized what he had intended to use the rope for. And he had prevented it.

His depression didn’t end immediately, but it did make him think harder about the impact his actions would have on his family, and on poor Geo.

After making the decision to abandon thoughts of suicide, if for no other reason that that Geo needed him, Bryon got yet another swift kick from life:

The biopsy of a lump on Geo’s head came back malignant….a particularly difficult form of cancer to fight.

But, since Geo didn’t give up on him, Byron decided to fight with everything possible to keep Geo alive!

He can’t afford the astronomical expense, so he has started an online fundraiser to save Geo’s life.

Here’s hoping that Byron and Geo get to spend a lot more quality years together, and that the “black dog” of depression never visits Byron ever again.

But no matter what happens, we have learned that man’s best friend is named such for a reason.

And sometimes, he’s not just a friend…but a protective angel from God.
