In many rural villages, animals fall into wells all the time.

So, when one villager in Madhya Pradesh heard splashing and cries coming from a deep well, he wasn’t immediately concerned.

After all, just about anything could’ve fallen in. Maybe it was a dog or a cat.

But when he peeked over the edge of the well, he couldn’t believe his eyes!

It was a cat all right, but definitely not any cat he would’ve expected to find at the bottom of his village’s very deep well!

He immediately jumped back and ran for help, because he knew this was one particular rescue he could never attempt on his own…

At the bottom of the well, splashing about and crying (or, in fact, roaring) was a leopard!

The 3-year-old leopard needed assistance the villagers couldn’t provide, so the man who’d made the incredible discovery called Forest Service officials for help.

But even when the officials were on the scene, everyone realized they’d have to be very creative … and very careful!

The leopard was obviously quite agitated and probably wasn’t going to like people getting close, even if it was to rescue her.

Then Forest Services assistant director Lokesh Nirapure got an idea:

“I instructed my staff to arrange ladders and some ropes.

When I reached the spot, the ladder was ready.”

Unfortunately, the leopard didn’t even notice the ladder at first. It kept frantically splashing around and whining.

But finally, the scared animal spotted the ladder and realized it just might work … she reached out a few paws and tentatively grabbed one of the rungs.

Incredibly, she started to climb without the help of any ropes!

Everyone watched in consternation as the leopard clambered all the way to the top of the ladder and escaped the well.

The instant it was clear, the beautiful – yet still terrified animal – shot off into the nearby woods.

Well, that was to be expected, right?

At the very least, it was saved and could continue its life in the forest.

Not long after, villagers learned that Forest officials had actually done this before; another leopard had gotten trapped in a well close by, and they’d used the same rescue tactic.

Maybe these leopards need to be more careful about where they’re getting water!
