At first, rescuers don’t understand why he’s so scared … then, a video emerges that shows a horrific crime.

And this dog saw everything!

If you didn’t know, Lebanon’s current president, Michel Aoun, recently passed a new animal welfare law that banned the torture and abuse of animals.

However, despite the law, workers from the Municipality of Ghobeiry brought food laced with poison to feed to a family of stray dogs.

How sick is that?!

Sadly, as soon as the dogs ate the poison, they started to die. Onlookers were horrified.

One of them filmed the event and made sure that Animals Lebanon, a local animal welfare organization, received a copy.

“The video is quite graphic,” Maggie Shaarawi, vice president of Animals Lebanon, told The Dodo.

“It shows men dressed in municipality uniforms putting food mixed with poison for friendly dogs who come with wagging tails to eat.

Shortly after, the dogs are shivering on the ground.”

The only dog that survived was the one that ran away from the men, instead of towards them.

Everyone who saw the video was shocked, including the president himself.

He posted a photo of himself with his dog on Facebook, along with a statement condemning the way the workers had dealt with the stray dogs.

“The most heartbreaking scene is when one of the dogs approaches the men, almost asking for mercy for his friends who are dying,” Shaarawi added.

“The man didn’t stop there or feel any mercy toward that friendly dog…

…instead he put food on the end of the stick mixed with poison and shoved it in his mouth.”

Talk about disgusting. It makes you want to scream, doesn’t it?

Out of the large group of friendly but unclaimed animals, only one dog in the family survived:

The one dog that didn’t come running out to meet the men.

Indeed, his fear of humans actually saved his life.

When Shaarawi learned of the one survivor she immediately sent a team to find him and bring him to the shelter.

They started calling the dog “Survivor” because his existence was such a miracle.

“He was very scared, and he had his tail between his legs,” Shaarawi said.

“He kept running away. But Kamal, one of our volunteers on the ground, is known for his persistence.

He kept following him until finally he was cornered.”

Once Kamal had captured the dog, he took him to a local vet clinic for a complete checkup.

Thankfully, Survivor turned out to be in good health, despite having lived on the streets for so long.

He had never trusted humans, and now he had even less reason to.

After all, humans had killed all of his family and friends!

And now they had captured him and were, in his mind at least, keeping him prisoner…

“He was very fearful, and he would shake any time someone came near him,” Shaarawi said.

“We took him to our care, and every day we tried to gain his trust.”

It was a long slow process.

They patiently spent time with him, giving him treats and letting him learn that humans could indeed be trusted.

Under their constant care and attention, Survivor slowly blossomed into a confident, happy dog.

Now, not only has Survivor come out of his shell, but his rescuers have discovered that he will make someone a lovely pet.

“He is an adorable dog — smart and gentle,” Shaarawi said.

“He is toilet trained, rarely barks and all he wants is human company.”

He’s a long way from the timid, fearful dog that hid in the bushes instead of taking treats from human strangers.

Thank goodness he didn’t take those “treats,” though!

“Every time I go to see him, he is almost dancing from happiness,” Shaarawi added.

“His whole body is shaking right and left.”

The lonely cat would often show up in a certain family’s backyard, looking for some food and affection.

Then one day, Tommy showed up as usual … but very clearly, something awful had happened to the poor kitty.

Tommy had severe burns all over his face and he was obviously in a lot of pain.

In horror, the family realized that someone had poured acid all over the innocent creature!

Well, they couldn’t just let Tommy walk around like that, so they quickly scooped him up and rushed him to the vet’s.

And at first, after the vet realized Tommy had FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus), he wanted to put the cat down.

But the family didn’t like that idea, because they really saw something special in Tommy…

They believed this cat had a ton to offer the world; there was just something about his personality.

So, despite the odds being stacked against Tommy, they decided to push forward and give him a chance: they contacted Milo’s Sanctuary to see if they would accept the suffering cat.

Thankfully, they were happy to take Tommy in, and that’s when his long road to recovery began.

For six long weeks, Tommy slowly got better and better. He underwent numerous skin grafts and lots of bandaging and rebandaging, too.

But Tommy never lost his lovable demeanor and as it turns out, that attitude, coupled with his “new look,” went a long way…

As lo and behold, the family was exactly right: they really HAD seen something special in Tommy, because this kitty had what Hollywood calls, “the ‘it’ factor!”

Incredibly, the unique-looking kitty became the camera’s best friend overnight!

Tommy’s quirky face and outgoing personality are perfect for pictures, as Milo’s Sanctuary president Michele Hoffman says:

“He loves to go out in the public and meet friends.

He’s kind of a ham and knows when he’s having his photo taken.

He loves tuna flakes and that’s one of our secrets to the great photos of him. He would do just about anything for some tuna flakes.”

Though Tommy has only one eye, he doesn’t act like a disabled animal at all.

He loves all the attention!

And now that he’s such a big hit, Tommy has his own Instagram account under the fantastic name, Sir Thomas Trueheart.

Added Hoffman:

“That has been the most amazing thing to be a part of … how much people love him and how much he’s inspired people all over the world.

On his [Instagram] account every Thursday we do Cruelty Free Thursday with Tommy and cover different subjects, and it is our desire to get people motivated to make a difference locally and globally for those who cannot speak for themselves.”

From being a frightened stray that gets acid dumped all over him, to inspiring millions.

…that might be the biggest and best turnaround ever!

On June 25, temperatures were soaring and everyone was trying to stay cool. That went double for our furry friends.

But unfortunately, some four-legged creatures aren’t blessed with caring, loving owners.

York City Center police officers got a call that two dogs were trapped inside a blazing hot car, and the owner wasn’t anywhere in sight.

Nobody knew how long the owner had been gone, but it was obvious that both dogs – adorable Labradors – were suffering.

How much longer could the poor pooches last inside that baking metal oven…?

Well, the cops found the doors locked and they couldn’t immediately locate the negligent owner. So, they made a snap decision:

They knew the pups wouldn’t last much longer, and they had to do something drastic…

#PC1810 and PCSO 3680 have just rescued two dogs from a vehicle where the owners had left them for over half an hour in a car in the blazing hot sun. In a flash, they smashed the driver-seat window to get into the parked car, and reached the dying dogs!

It was so hot inside the car that even the officers had trouble breathing … can you imagine what it must’ve been like for those poor animals?

The pups were quickly rushed to a nearby veterinarian to be treated for obvious heat exhaustion, and they remained in the care of the RSPCA for quite some time.

And in the meantime, the police department wrote on Twitter that “the owners will be prosecuted,” and added:

“There is no excuse for this, I am utterly appalled…“

The RSPCA also had a response to this terrible event:

“A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly, even when it doesn’t feel that warm.

When it’s 22 degrees (71 °F), in a car it can reach an unbearable 47 degrees (116 °F) within the hour.”

They added that “dogs die in hot cars” and sadly, this happens all the time, in all parts of the world.

But as the police said, there’s just no excuse for this!

Thankfully, the cops acted strongly and just in time … nobody cares about a person’s property when the lives of innocent animals are on the line!

And usually, they are. But every once in a while, you hear a nightmare story … and the animal lover in you is outraged.

Such is the case here:

Bridget Woodson, a volunteer at an Indiana animal shelter, didn’t realize that shelter cats were disappearing at first.

Then one day, she was told to do something absolutely abominable:

She was told to kill a sick cat by putting it in the freezer!

And she wasn’t asked just once; she was asked twice. Thankfully, she refused both times, but this prompted her decision to quit.

Woodson initially was too afraid to go to the police because of retaliation from the management but luckily, her conscience got the better of her.

But this isn’t true at all.

The American Veterinary Association’s euthanasia guidelines specifically states that hypothermia is NOT an acceptable method.

The Spencer County Sheriff’s Office immediately opened an investigation into these allegations and horribly, they’re true.

The shelter did in fact kill multiple animals by freezing them alive!

The little pup was less than 1 year old and yet, her evil owners must’ve left her tied to that tree for months.

The Staffordshire terrier mix was supposed to have been a guard dog, but nobody ever bothered to care for her.

And because of that, the ailing creature had suffered terribly … both physically and mentally.

Ziva had lost most of her fur due to mange, her body was covered with sores, and her foot pads were rubbed raw.

On top of that, due to the awful situation, she’d become frightened and suspicious of humans.

Well, can you blame her?!

Ziva was quickly taken to a nearby shelter but Barbara Zuluaga, a member of A Chance to Bloom Dog Rescue, knew Ziva needed more.

“Ziva needed to leave the shelter immediately in her immune-suppressed state, so without hesitation, we answered the call for help.”

They weren’t sure if the poor pup could recover, given the fact that the odds were stacked against her.

But it’s amazing to see how a dog can rebound when she’s shown love and affection!

One of the vet technicians, Stephanie Williams, watched over Ziva as she rapidly improved, and said:

“She got to see what it was like to be in a home, and how to eat out of a dog bowl and drink out of a dog water bowl and sleep in a bed and how to jump up on the couch.

She did really, really well overcoming the adversities and the challenges that had been set before her, and I’m proud of her.“

Now, Ziva has made a full recovery. And better yet, she has found a loving foster home with Cassie Rogers!

Cassie also decided to rename the intrepid pooch; her new name is Roxy. And the update is rosy:

“Roxy is doing fabulously.

“She is starting to play with toys, loves food time and treats, snuggles on the couch with us and sleeps in the bed, gives me kisses, and just wants to run and play with the big dogs.

I am in love with her.”

When a four-legged friend suffers through such a horrible nightmare, you pray for rescue. Sometimes, it never happens.

But when it does, the transformation we see in that animal is just beyond words, isn’t it?

Just ask a poor pup named Liszka. Her abusive owner left her locked in a cage that was far too small for her, and showed her no care or affection.

There Liszka languished, with barely enough food to survive, suffering in a rusty, horrible cage.

And you can also imagine that such a prison has other terrible side effects…

The rescue team from OTOZ Animals discovered that soon enough when they arrived on the scene.

They’d been called to the site after concerned neighbors alerted the group to Liszka’s situation, so the team rushed to help.

Well, they found the terrified pooch in the cramped cage, and they immediately moved in to free her.

Said one of the rescuers:

“She was lying and waiting for death. She was somewhere between scrap and waste.”

But it got even worse when they opened the cage because they realized that Liszka couldn’t come out to greet them…

In fact, she couldn’t move much at all!

After sitting in that horrible cage for days on end, the dog had developed muscular contractures and could no longer walk.

This is just unforgivable, isn’t it, fellow pet lovers?

The good news is that vets went right to work, massaging Liszka’s muscles every single day until she could regain some of her mobility.

And blessedly, the treatment has been working.

The rescued pup still can’t walk or run normally just yet but she’s relearning those mechanics at a rapid pace, and things are definitely looking up!

The team says, “every day you see improvement,” and you really couldn’t ask for a better result.

Thanks to the diligent, hard-working rescuers and doctors, Liszka should finally become a happy, healthy pup once more!

And after that, let’s hope she finds a loving home, with humans who will finally treat her with the proper respect.

As for her former abusive owner … well, we say arrest that person. Wouldn’t you agree?

For some reason, this pooch was sitting on a pile of dirty rags inside an old tire, and she wasn’t moving much.

She didn’t really even turn her head when the neighbor carefully approached.

That’s when this kind-hearted individual realized that the dog not only couldn’t turn her head, she couldn’t lower it at all…

And it’s all because of a chain wrapped around the pup’s neck.

The dog wasn’t just chained up … she was literally hanging by that chain!

The chain was just way too short and the appalled neighbor rushed for the phone. This poor pooch needed immediate help!

Later, rescuers from Territorio de Zaguates in San Jose, Costa Rica would learn the sad story behind this pup, named Cala.

Cala’s owner rarely gave her enough food and never took her to the vet, and he kept her on a dangerously short chain for most of the day.

The property manager found one of those “things” when he went to check out the apartment after everyone had left.

It was a tiny terrified puppy, sitting under the dirty sink in the bathroom!

Then he got close and realized that the poor pup’s previous owners had done something absolutely terrible…

They’d not only left the frightened dog behind when they disappeared, they’d only given her a little bowl of food and a bit of water to survive on.

Worse still, they tied her to the pipe under the sink, which resulted in an awful neck injury!

The landlord knew he had to help the dog, whose name was Autumn. She was obviously petrified, malnourished, and the neck injury needed immediate treatment.

So, he quickly called Kate’s Rescue for Animals, and volunteers sped out to pick her up.

They carefully cut off her collar and after examining her injuries, they found it was worse than they thought:

Autumn was going to need surgery to close the open wound on her neck; if she didn’t get it ASAP, she wouldn’t survive.

They said Autumn might’ve been sitting there for well over a week, so the little pup was also emaciated and dehydrated. She also craved human contact, and for good reason.

“She is super sweet, and loves to be held, because she’s been neglected for so long,” Kim Dunn, a volunteer with Kate’s Rescue for Animals, told The Dodo.

The good news is that Autumn has managed to bounce back rather quickly, and despite a sudden fever that concerned vets for a while, she’s now resting comfortably.

She can’t yet be around other dogs during her recovery, but her ultra-sweet personality will always shine through!

And before long, she should be off to her fur-ever home, which will have owners that will never, ever leave her tied up to die in an empty bathroom.

No animal should suffer through such a horrifying experience!

How can humans do such obscene things to innocent creatures, especially dogs? Man’s best friend doesn’t deserve such malicious treatment!

If you’re in a position where you can no longer care for an animal, you do the responsible thing and try to find it a good home. At the very least, take it to a no-kill shelter.

You don’t just abandon it to the elements and forget the poor thing even exists.

And you certainly don’t cover it in messages with permanent ink!

Granted, the messages in question were cries for help but even so, there were better ways to deal with such a situation. And rescuers can’t believe this is what the previous owner chose to do.

The dog in question was found wandering around a park with several messages scrawled in ink all over its body. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan delivered the dog to a nearby shelter.

Those messages read “Free” and “Good Home Only,” which really stunned Brittany May, Ross County Human Society shelter manager:

“So I usually try to contain my self with my work life and with what I see every single day, but this just tops it off!

How are you going to dump your dog, and write FREE all over it in permanent marker! I just don’t get it!

Anybody know this dog? Found dumped at the armory down in the park! This is a whole new level of LOW!”

Everyone is just baffled as to why anybody would do such a thing. If you wanted the dog to have a good home, why didn’t you try to find one?

And since when do you paint up a dog with permanent ink? Is that supposed to make your decision any less despicable?

Sometimes, one has to wonder what’s going on in the minds of pet owners … but one thing’s for sure:

They should never have been pet owners in the first place!

It’s even more depressing when the cause of those terrible things is entirely the fault of humans. It’s up to us to protect them, not injure them!

Nugget is an adorable 2-year-old pooch that very nearly lost her life, and all because the mean streets of a big city can be violent.

Rescuers found Nugget on the New York City streets and the instant they laid eyes on her, they knew she was in trouble.

She couldn’t move well and there was obviously something wrong inside; that’s when they looked close and realized the awful truth:

There was a bullet hole in the dog’s side!

The team immediately rushed her to the vet’s, concerned about her dropping blood pressure. It was a race against time to save the severely injured pup!

And when they finally got Nugget to the doctor, everybody was stunned to learn the truth: that bullet had done a gigantic amount of damage. In fact, Nugget shouldn’t even be alive!

Here’s a statement from Second Chance Rescue NYC Dogs:

“The bullet blasted through practically every major organ in her body. Went through her abdomen, chest , diaphragm, spleen, gallbladder, intestine, and now remains lodged in her liver.

The bullet needs to remain in the liver, should it be attempted to be pulled out…it would kill her.”

Thankfully, BluePearl, a specialty emergency pet hospital, was able to perform the necessary surgery. They repaired all the damage done by that bullet, though the dog was still in critical condition.

Nugget did have a microchip but when they contacted her owners, the owners said they had no interest in keeping her. They’d just tossed her into the street!

So there Nugget was, fighting for her life, with nobody to love her.

But she has maintained her good spirits throughout the ordeal, and the team is actively searching for someone to adopt her:

“There is something very in-particular we will be looking for from her future adopter. When she is medically cleared in a month, we will adopt her out to someone who will be careful with her heart.

She has had enough selfish people in her life and we are not looking to add on another one. She deserves to have someone be very mindful of her and put her feelings first.. not an afterthought.

This picture is from today, it is difficult to not fall in love with her.”

They’re so right!

She does need a loving home and someone who understands all the trauma she has experienced.

A loving, innocent pup like Nugget shouldn’t ever have to suffer a bullet again, and she deserves some extra TLC.
