Sometimes just being alone in an otherwise empty house can bring to mind every moment of every horror movie you’ve ever seen.

The creaking of a floor, the brushing of a bush against a window…tiny sounds that normally wouldn’t even be noticeable, but suddenly seem booming and ominous.

Tara McVicar learned the hard way that ignoring things that go bump in the night won’t make them go away. At least not always.

Certainly not when you’ve just discovered that the noises you heard in your empty home were, in fact, something alive inside a black garbage bag in your closet!

All Tara wanted was for it to go away. But the rustling was getting louder, so she had to check it out…and what a surprise she got!

When Tara got closer, she was suddenly confronted by a grey furry face that seemed to be mostly long sharp teeth.

And the rustling was just the warm-up for the loud hiss that came from that toothy mouth…

It was a possum! Who would ever expect to find a possum, inside your home, inside a bag, inside your closet? Certainly not Tara!

She attempted to poke the possum and learned quickly that poking a possum is as ill-advised as poking the proverbial bear. Lesson learned.

But what to do now?

“Alright, opossum. You can’t live in my closet, buddy,” Tara calmly told the critter, while attempting to maneuver a series of items out of the way.

But as you can imagine, the opossum didn’t agree with Tara. She was pretty sure the closet was hers; possession is nine tenths of the law, even possums know that!

Despite the fact that Tara was trying to be kind and gentle, the little possum felt threatened. She had no way of knowing Tara was there to help.

So, she did what possums do best: she scared the bejeezus out of Tara!

There’s no animal in the world that can look as vicious as a possum when it’s ticked off or frightened. They turn into little grey balls of fur, full of sharp teeth.

When she came back, she was armed with gloves and a broom. No possum was going to scare her out of her own closet!

Unfortunately, that’s what the possum was thinking too…no human with a broom was going to scare her!

At that point, Tara decided she was going to have be more aggressive if she wanted to get rid of the persistent possum.

Poking the garbage bag with the broom only made things worse. The possum continued to hiss and snap in her direction.

“That is a very terrifying sound! It is! It’s a terrifying sound, but you’re relatively cute,” she could be heard telling the marsupial.

Tara backed away for a bit to regroup. She peeked back into the closet, and found the possum seeming to relax a bit.

And that’s when she got the shock of a lifetime!

There wasn’t just “a possum in her closet.” There was a whole FAMILY of possums!

The mama had just been trying to protect her babies from the crazy woman with a broom!

Once Tara realized that the mom was just doing her job, it all made sense. And certainly changed her opinion of the situation.

She decided to help mom find a better place for her babies though.

No matter how cute they were, they couldn’t live in her closet!

Tara’s phone died for a while, so we’re not quite sure how she did it, but she managed to get two of the babies away from their mom.

She carried them outside to an old rabbit hutch in the yard.

She was sure to let the mama see that her babies weren’t being hurt, and she could join them. If she’d just leave the closet.

Next, Tara set up a basket for the opossum and her remaining babies to climb into. 

“You just have to get in the basket and I will take you to them. It’s a win-win! I can wait all day long.

All day long, mama,” Tara could be heard saying.

Mama possum checked out the basket and decided she just wasn’t in the mood to go for a ride. She wouldn’t let her babies inside it, either.

They were all hanging onto her back for dear life, wondering what on earth their mom had gotten them into!

Eventually, Tara realized that if she just backed away, the little mama would decide she wanted to be out of the closet as badly as Tara wanted her out.

Slowly and carefully, the mama possum carrying her precious cargo, meandered through Tara’s house.

Most likely, she was searching for the babies Tara had taken from her.
