It all began when Dave pulled over near a bright, sun-splashed field to enjoy the view. A group of cows grazed lazily nearby.

Then something strange happened:

One of the cows appeared anxious and for some reason, she kept trying to get Dave’s attention.

The cow was mooing and scraping the dirt, and often looking in Dave’s direction, as if to say, “Come over and see!”

But why would a cow want a human to follow her? Cows aren’t exactly known for being especially social, after all.

Well, Dave was definitely curious. And there really did seem to be something amiss … that’s when Dave decided he’d follow the cow.

And boy, was he glad he did!

He followed the nervous cow to a wire fence, and that’s where she leaned down to sniff at something…

It was a newborn calf!

And obviously, the poor little guy wasn’t in good condition. The calf appeared to be severely dehydrated and worse still, the fresh umbilical cord was still attached.

This was a very new baby, of course, and she was in desperate need of assistance. But there was another problem:

The fence was electrified! Dave would have to brave that fence if he wanted to help the struggling newborn.

He took the chance and unfortunately, he got shocked a few times … but he wasn’t to be deterred!

He was able to extricate the frightened and ailing newborn and the mother cow – later named Flo – was so happy to get her baby back!

They live on a small farm in Ireland, and they decided to purchase some fertilized duck eggs.

The hardest part of having the eggs on the farm would be keeping predators from having them as a feast.

So, they put them in the barn where they would be safe.

When they came out to check on the eggs one morning, they were surprised to see the shells; they had already hatched.

But where did the ducklings go?

Suddenly, the cat jumped down from the rafters. Then it hit them: the kitty – named Della – had had them for breakfast!

Actually, she hadn’t eaten them…yet. Six hours later, Ronan finds the ducklings but Della has her sights on them, too, and quickly pounces.

“I was thinking, ‘Oh no,’” Ronan said. “We’re only [just] getting them back, and now she’s going to eat them right in front of us!”

But that’s not what she did. Incredibly, Della laid down on her side and the little duckling crawled under her.

The other little ducks joined in. Della started purring loudly…yes, she had taken in the motherless babies!

But that wasn’t the end of their surprises for the day.

A short time later, they found that Della had given birth during the night, just before finding the ducklings, and she loved them all!

Della even nursed the ducklings like she did her kittens. Ducklings usually search for their own food after hatching, but they were quite happy to nurse along with the kittens.

It was quite a sight!

The ducks grew to be much bigger than their ‘mother’, but they still stay close to her, as well as their kitten brothers and sisters.

The joke is obvious, right?

However, an Arizona coonhound named “Lucky” absolutely deserves the name!

If he could talk, there’s no question that Lucky the Coonhound would have quite the story to tell. But as he can’t talk, we’ll do it for him…

The blessed dog was found a few weeks ago by a Border Patrol agent; the poor creature had been left for dead in a ditch in a rural stretch of desert near the Mexican border, with a big wound on his head.

The dog was taken to a shelter in Bisbee, where a traveling vet took x-rays and discovered the mark on his head was actually a bullet hole!

The slug had passed between the dog’s eyes and lodged in his jaw, according to a spokesman with the Arizona Animal Welfare League.

“It was a big 9mm and he had been shot between the eyes and that was the mark and it embedded itself in his jaw,” Michael Moorefield said. 

“You can feel the indentation between his eyes and it’s so unbelievable that it doesn’t affect him.”

No one has stepped up with information about how Lucky came to be left for dead in a desert ditch, but one thing is certain:

After living through the surgery to remove the bullet and fix the damage, and healing up quickly and beautifully, everyone agrees that Lucky is aptly named.

What other pup would have such amazing luck?!
Lucky has made friends everywhere he’s gone, too, with his bright eyes and wagging tail.

You can still feel a bit of indention between his eyes where the bullet damaged his skull, but otherwise, he appears unscathed.

“It’s so unbelievable that a dog that has gone through so much has this extremely uplifting personality,” said Moorefield.

If you’re interested, Lucky is up for adoption at AAWL in Phoenix. But, if you’re thinking about taking Lucky home with you, be sure your fence is escape-proof!

Lucky is described as playful, energetic, and good with children.

He is an American English Coonhound and at only 1 year and 3 months old, Lucky is barely past being a puppy and has a lot of years ahead of him!

Please be careful, Lucky, as you may not get to keep your name next time!

Even when you know you’ve exhausted all efforts in finding them, you still feel as if you should be doing something.

It’s even more heartbreaking when you wonder if you could perhaps have done something to avoid the situation.

That’s what happened to Albert Silver when his 13-year-old Labrador, Sophie, disappeared.

“Thursday before supper we all went out to shovel and plow,” Albert explained on Facebook.

“Sophie loves to be a part of this. She followed us next door to her aunt’s house when we plowed there.

Afterward, she went to a neighbor’s house that she visits often and then he sent her home. She was last seen leaving his house.” 

He and his family had been shoveling and plowing their Maine home when Sophie wandered off.

The Labrador usually stays near the house or visits next door but suddenly, she was nowhere to be found!

Albert put out a desperate alert on his Facebook for all his friends and family to be on the lookout for the sweet yellow Labrador Retriever.

“Sophie has made this neighborhood her own and had many people she visited, even had her own normal paths to take to get to each place,” Albert explained.

“Everyone around here knows her well and was nice to her.”

Everyone worked together to look for Sophie.

By the fourth day of searching, things were looking grim…because of her age, it was doubtful that Sophie could have survived the cold temperatures and extreme snowfall.

“Please share, let us know if she’s been spotted or any other scenario,” Albert wrote.

“We have calls in to animal control, responsible pet care, the town office, and neighbors.”

Even if they were only able to recover Sophie’s body, they wanted to have closure. They wanted to know what happened to her.

A whopping 2,000 people shared the post with his plea for help!

Soon, Albert and his family received offers of help and prayers and support from people all over, many of whom they didn’t even know.

They posted photos of Sophie along with their plea to help them find her.

They kept hoping against hope that someone would recognize her and return her to her family! But sadly, no calls came, except those offering sympathy.

They were about to abandon all hope when suddenly, the phone rang. And this time it wasn’t just more support…it was the news they’d all been praying for!

Sophie had been spotted. Well, part of her had: her head had been seen poking up out of a huge mound of snow!

Whether she had fallen into it somehow or had been covered inadvertently, no one will ever know. But she was definitely alive.

“It’s a miracle. Sophie has been found alive and well,” Albert wrote on Facebook.

“She spent 5 days out in extreme cold and winds and in the snow.”

It took some work with the snowplow to get her out of the snow, but she wagged her tail as soon as she was freed.

Then they immediately took her to the vet to make sure she was okay.

The next post to Facebook was even more positive:

“No frostbite. Lost 5 pounds, hungry and tired,” Albert wrote.

“Blood work and X-rays all showed a healthy girl.”

People around the country were thrilled to see the news that the elderly Lab had been reunited with her family!

Sophie received a touching Welcome Home party, complete with a cake decorated to tell Sophie exactly how the family felt about her.

The family’s little boy had spelled it out in sprinkles…”Sophy, luv you”

Hopefully the next time the snow plows are roaring, Sophie will stay inside where it’s warm, with a family that “luvs her.”

Most of it, unfortunately, is junk or debris; and if we see it, we should probably do our little part to help beautify earth’s beaches.

Then there are times when something entirely unexpected washes up on shore…and it’s moving!

Dirk and Lori Morgan, owners of Morgan’s Jungle Lodge and Morgan’s Canoe & Outdoor Adventures, were exploring Costa Rica’s Peninsula Beach after high tide.

That’s when they spotted a small furry animal clinging to the rocks. It was barely moving and it didn’t make any noise…what was it?

At first, the Morgans thought it might be a cat or a dog, perhaps abandoned by the owner and left to fend for itself on the rough beach.

But when the couple cautiously stepped closer, they realized it was an animal they never would’ve predicted to find near the ocean:

A young two-toed sloth!

The poor little guy was hanging on for dear life; it had barely managed to survive high tide and likely wouldn’t survive another.

Furthermore, knowing there were plenty of stray dogs wandering around that might be hungry, the Morgans figured they should get the sloth to safety ASAP.

So, they carefully picked him up, rinsed him clean of all the salt water, and wrapped him up in a blanket to keep him warm.

Afterward, they whisked him off to a nearby animal rescue where he’ll get some treatment, and doctors will determine if he’s healthy enough to return to the wild.

Nobody really knows how the sloth got out to the beach (or why), but we’re certainly relieved the Morgans found him.

The high seas are no place for such an animal! He belongs back in his natural habitat where he can thrive, so big thanks to the compassionate couple!

But sometimes, small things can also cause a lot of trouble. Ever try having a picnic with a horde of ants nearby?

In this particular case, something very small caused one major snarl on a very large road:

You’d think it would take something big like a tractor-trailer overturning to stop traffic but in this case, it was something tiny and adorable!

Police in Auckland, New Zealand were called about a “small orange and white ball of fluff” that was trying its hardest to cause accidents on the Southwestern Motorway.

She might be cute and cuddly, but she didn’t take kindly to big police guys chasing after her. She was terrified, of course!

“In all, it took a little over a half an hour for them to get her,” Shelley Nahr, media coordinator for the department, told The Dodo.

When the police first showed up, she was huddled up against a concrete barrier, looking quite innocent and frightened.

After an officer put her into his patrol car, he made a quick phone call before pulling away. When he finished his call he noticed the kitten wasn’t anywhere in sight…

Where could she be? He knew she was closed up in the car with him, and it’s not like there are a lot of hiding places in a car.

“He searched high and low and found nothing,” police said.

“Until he heard the faintest meow coming from inside the dashboard.”

So, realizing their rescue wasn’t complete yet, off they went to a local mechanic to rescue her for the second time in one day.

After removing the entire dash from the patrol car, mechanics found the kitten just where they had expected: tucked around a heating fan!

The cops were pretty impressed by her plucky spirit.

They were a little frustrated by the results, of course, but still, they had to admit she was a fighter!

In fact, the woman who first took the call that alerted the police to her predicament decided the little cat deserved a good home.

And, she had a dog named Dobby at home that really needed a new best friend. So, off went the little kitten to her new home and new best friend!

And she got a new name…Winky, the name of Dobby the Elf in the Harry Potter series’ best friend.

Little Winky is happy and safe in her new home. No need to run from the cops any more. Her life on the lam is over, and she has nothing but blue skies and all the kibble she can eat ahead of her.

Thanks so much to the police officers who risked public wrath by shutting down a major highway just to save a little kitten’s life!

She was so little, really, how much trouble could she be…?

But, how many of us would go an extra thousand miles?

Ikea Mosley’s pit bull, Zimba, was her best friend. They went everywhere together. He was always at her side.

She had to think long and hard when her boyfriend asked if Zimba could accompany him on a road trip to Maryland.

It would be hard to do without either one, but both at once? That was a tough proposition to swallow.

Reluctantly, she finally agreed and after a teary goodbye, her boyfriend drove away with Zimba riding shotgun.

Then, not long after, Ikea’s world fell apart. The relationship she had thought would last forever suddenly went kaput.

Right in the middle of his road trip, their relationship frayed and finally snapped apart.

Ikea was devastated at the loss but then, something even rose happened:

The angry ex told her that he was dumping Zimba in the middle of nowhere! And then refused to take any more of her calls.

All that Ikea knew was that he had been somewhere in Maryland when he allegedly dumped Zimba.

She had no way of knowing exactly where, when, or how he had “gotten rid” of the poor pooch.

Her heart was shattered. She had gone from being a woman with a man in her life, a child, and a dog, to being just a single mom…1000 miles away from the dog she loved.

Months passed and Ikea tried hard to put the pain behind her, but it never completely went away. She couldn’t stop wondering where Zimba was. Was he happy? Cared for?

Then, one day she got an incredible phone call…

Someone had spotted Zimba wandering the streets of Ridgely, Maryland; he was alone and he seemed lost.

The person alerted animal control, and an agent named Kaitlyn Noffsinger scooped him up and took him to a nearby Humane Society.

Luckily, Ikea had thought to have Zimba microchipped, so the rescue group was able to contact her to tell her that her dog was with them.

Of course Ikea was overjoyed with the news, but overshadowing the joy was the fact that was still one tiny fly in the ointment.

Zimba was safe again, but…he was 1,000 miles away from Ikea. And Ikea was a single mom with children and a job.

There was no way she could just leave and make the long drive to pick up the dog; the trip was simply out of the question.

Luckily, however, the folks at the Caroline County Humane Society weren’t about to give up without a fight.

First, they contacted airlines that might give Zimba a ride, but none would do so. Then, they called the Humane Society in Wichita. They, too, had no answers.

But meanwhile, animal control officer Kaitlyn Noffsinger—the woman who had first picked up Zimba—was keeping her boyfriend, Zach Holt, up to date on all the ongoing drama.

As a dog lover (and former animal control employee), Zach was particularly affected by Ikea and Zimba’s story.

In his eyes, life without his own dog and cat would be unbearable, so he could only imagine Ikea’s plight.

Zach told the local CBS affiliate WJZ-TV later, referring to his own dog:

“I can’t imagine my right-hand man being gone that long.”

He was being interviewed because of the idea he had to reunite Zimba with the woman he loved.

“I’m a bartender,” he told WJZ-TV. “I strictly work, you know, the weekends and Monday and I have Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday off.

And four days is plenty of time to get to Kansas and back, so I said, ‘Why not?‘”

Why not indeed?

Of course, nothing is easy. Road trips aren’t cheap. There’s gas, toll fees, lodging and food to think of.

Zach refused to profit from his offer to drive Zimba the 1,300 miles to Ikea, though he did accept a donation from the Humane Society to help with expenses.

“Zach is doing this strictly as a volunteer, asking for nothing,” a Humane Society employee wrote.

“However, we are incredibly grateful and need to try to raise money to cover his gas, tolls, and other expenses incurred.”

Zimba turned out to be the perfect riding companion. He rode quietly, watching traffic. No back seat driving at all.

Occasionally he would get a little excited about something he saw on the roadside, but for the most part he slept, posed for selfies with Zach, and just generally enjoyed the ride.

For a total of 20 hours, Zach, along with this dog he’d never met before the trip, cruised down the highway en route to Wichita.

And the whole time, back in Kansas, Ikea anxiously awaited the return of her beloved pet.

After a couple of days on the road, the big moment arrived:

Zimba and Ikea were about to be reunited!

It was a dark and wet night when Zach finally pulled up outside Ikea’s house.

But that didn’t deter Zimba from sprinting towards Ikea the instant he spotted her!

She dropped to her knees to greet him and just like that, it was as if they’d never been apart!

And Zach? Well, he had some amazing thoughts about it all…

If people just try,” Zach explained to KWCH News, “that’ll make a difference. I guess that’s one of the messages… Just try.

All I had to do was sacrifice a little bit of time to get him back here.”

Judging by the tears of joy on Ikea’s face and the fiercely wagging tail on Zimba, your sacrifice was greatly appreciated!

Congratulations you two on surviving a harrowing ordeal. May you two never be parted again!

Oh, and may the selfish ex that dumped you to die on the streets because he was mad at your mom get a flat tire every time he gets into a car for the rest of his life!

And that’d be letting him off easy!

The Hotel Nikko in San Francisco, California has an absolutely adorable puppy on staff that is just a phone call away.

Yes, this is a real thing.

The pup’s name is Buster Posey, and he’s been dubbed the “Chief Canine Officer.”

As you might’ve guessed, the adorable pooch is named after the popular San Francisco Giants catcher…just don’t expect the real Buster Posey to show up when you “order.”

But hey, who wants a boring ol’ catcher when you can have a beautiful, energetic puppy in your hotel room!

Toss in some room service and you’ve got the best reasons ever to stay in and take a load off. Buster will see to it you’re never lonely, that’s for sure.
