Even the experts at the shelter couldn’t stop the poor little thing from crying and crying. And the kitten was in generally good health, too.

What was wrong? And how could they get the tiny tyke to settle down?

Well, maybe they just needed someone with a magic touch … and we all know that children have magic in their fingers!

Kelli Gross is an avid rescuer and foster mother who has taken in over 100 kittens, so she’s no stranger to felines in distress.

So when she heard about Ariel, she quickly drove to the shelter to pick her up. Another adorable kitten to save and foster!

She brought her 10-year-old son Zack with her, too … and it’s a good thing she did.

Because when Kelli and Zack arrived to pick up Ariel, they heard the frightened kitten crying. She was still distraught; nobody could get her to stop.

Then something amazing happened:

“…but when Zack picked her up, everything changed.

‘She was going crazy and wouldn’t settle down,” Kelli remembers.

Then Zack’s quiet voice and gentle touch convinced the little kitten that she was safe and everything was going to be alright.”

The 10-year-old boy’s magic touch was just the ticket. Ariel never made a sound after Zack picked her up, and stayed quiet the whole ride home. Said Kelli:

“He put a blanket down in his lap and bundled her up.

She was sound asleep and didn’t make a peep during the whole 30-minute car ride home.”

As it turns out, Zack’s connection with kittens extends beyond Ariel. He just seems to understand them, and they understand him.

“He has a routine of waking up and telling them good morning every day before school and then coming and kissing every single one goodnight before bed.

He makes sure that they all feel included.

He misses them when he’s away and they’re the first thing he says ‘Hi’ to when he gets home from anywhere.

He just makes it effortless and you can tell that it’s actually ingrained into his heart.”

Maybe this is all because innocence is drawn to innocence … innocent children have an innate connection to innocent animals.

I mean, just look at them! Despite a slight coloring difference, these two could be identical twin siblings.

But therein lies the mystery that has been baffling cat lovers for some time now.

This is Suzume and Unagi, two beautiful kitties that live with their adoring mom in Japan and yes, the two felines look extremely similar.

The minute mom started sharing pics of these two pretties, everyone guessed they were in fact related.

However, in point of fact, these two cats are separate rescues and as far as anyone knows, they’re not related at all!

The mother had Suzume first and then when searching for another kitty at the animal shelter, she stumbled on Suzume’s doppleganger. As she told Love Meow:

“I saw from a website by chance during my work break that a kitten who looks exactly like my cat, Suzume, was at the animal center.

Kittens can only stay there for one week.”

Just before Unagi hit his “deadline” at the shelter, the kindly mom stepped and and adopted him, and she brought him home to meet Suzume.

Well, she was even more shocked at just how closely Suzume and Unagi appeared in the looks category!

And furthermore, the two cats quickly bonded. Suzume couldn’t go anywhere without Unagi following, and he didn’t mind in the slightest.

The kitties are best friends now and their pics and videos on Instagram have proven to be immensely popular.

Most just can’t believe these two cats aren’t related and in fact, perhaps they are…

But we may never know. All we do know is that two strikingly similar animals really love each other; maybe fate brought them together!

And really, who cares if they’re related? They’re obviously blissfully content!

They deserve every ounce of care and affection they can get, of course, but it takes a special kind of person to deliver that very unique brand of TLC.

And it takes an even more caring and flexible individual to roll with the punches…

For example, let’s say you think you know all about an adopted animal’s disabilities, and you’re perfectly prepared to handle it.

But then you get the animal home and you realize that in fact, there are even more difficult hurdles to clear!

That’s what happened to a man named Zeyad K., who was kindhearted enough to take in a tiny weeks-old kitten he found abandoned on the staircase of his apartment building.

At first, he didn’t realize the poor creature was actually blind; he thought the kitten, who he named Votchy, just had an eye infection and it would clear up.

But sadly, it didn’t. As he told Love Meow:

“I opened her eye sockets to check, but there was nothing inside.

That’s when I knew that she was completely blind.“

But that wasn’t enough to deter Zeyad; he stayed by her side and continued to care for the furry disabled young’un.

The kitten began to grow and her caring owner kept a close eye on her; after all, Votchy needed him to be her eyes! But Zeyad soon found that that wasn’t all she needed…

“She didn’t seem to be startled by any loud, jarring noise even though my other cat would immediately start running away if I started the vacuum or blender,” Zeyad said.

“She gets startled super easily if someone touches her even slightly.

When I snapped my fingers really loudly right next to her ears, she would not even flinch or react in the slightest.”

Yes, sadly, poor Votchy was also deaf as well as blind!

But again, Zeyad wasn’t about to give up on the little tyke. If anything, it just reinforced his resolve and he swears he’ll never leave Votchy’s side.

“It was one of my better decisions in life,” he said.

“Now she’s living her life just like any other cat, and absolutely loves to be petted.“

Isn’t this the kind of love and happiness every animal should enjoy?

Unfortunately, not all animals are so lucky but at least little Votchy is among the wonderfully blessed!

It’s sad that we live in a world that puts so much emphasis on appearance, isn’t it?

Make someone a few pounds overweight, give them frizzy hair, a limp, or a speech impediment and soon they’ll be saying, “Don’t hate me because I’m NOT beautiful!”

It’s the same for animals, unfortunately. Everyone in the rescue field knows that a black dog or cat in a kill shelter likely won’t make it out alive, for example.

One ginger cat at the Clermont County Animal Shelter knows all about being passed over because of her appearance.

Scarlet was living on the streets after being declawed and abandoned. Being declawed left her with no way to defend herself.

So when she showed up on someone’s porch and pawed relentlessly at their door until they noticed her, she was covered in wounds and scars.

She was not only looking for a safe haven, she was desperately looking for someone to love her.

…and sadly, she still is.

She’s been at the shelter ever since she arrived over a year ago. Luckily, it’s not a high kill shelter or she would have been euthanized months ago.

She’s seen a lot of changes come and go at the shelter. She watched the shelter be taken over by the Clermont Animal CARE Humane Society, which held a big adoption event to celebrate the new management.

Over half of the animals in the shelter were adopted out — but not Scarlet.

Is there anything wrong with her? Is she sick? Disabled? Horrible temperament?

Not at all. Her only fault is that she’s 9 years old, has walked some hard roads in her life and isn’t the perky young spotted kitten that potential adopters always fall in love with.

But nobody at the shelter can figure out exactly why no one has fallen in love with Scarlet. They all adore her.
