The poor thing had a broken leg, and locals said she’d recently been abandoned.

Hagar rushed to the area in question but at first, he could find no trace of the wayward pup.

Then a stranger approached and gave the rescuer some terrible news:

The dog, who locals had named Gaia, had been hit by a car!

Hagar raced to the scene in the hopes of reaching Gaia in time but sadly, by the time he got there, he was too late…

Poor Gaia was already gone.

It seemed like Hagar’s rescue mission had ended in failure, and he was about ready to leave when suddenly, another pedestrian approached.

This one had more news … but this wasn’t bad news at all!

Gaia had recently given birth, and her puppies had to be somewhere nearby. And that’s when Hagar knew exactly what he had to do.

He first bent over the deceased Gaia and:

“I told her I was sorry people did this.

I promised her that I would save her babies.”

The mama pup might be gone, but at least her puppies wouldn’t have to suffer the same fate!

And about a mile down the road, Hagar did in fact find those puppies: three adorable orphans!

They were hiding in an underground tunnel and one of them got scared and hid in a well.

But Hagar had made a promise and he was determined to keep it!

He worked hard to get all three pups – including the one that had wedged herself into the well – safe and sound.

And better yet, the puppies – Sydney, Matilda, and Gabriella – were all in good health, and they only needed some loving souls to give them good homes.

The good news is that each of the three babies did indeed get adopted!

In the end, Hagar kept his promise.

And though Gaia wasn’t around to see it, she’s probably smiling down on Hagar and her wonderful puppies from doggie heaven!

Though they’re certainly pet lovers, they have to be wary of frightened strays, many of which haven’t felt a loving human touch in a very long time.

So, when the Hope for Paws rescue team got a call about some abandoned puppies living in a cave, they prepared for a risky rescue situation. But they had no idea just how risky it was going to be!

When they arrived on the scene, most of the pups were at the entrance of the cave, and the rescuers tried to lure them out with some cheeseburger pieces.

This was starting to work but then suddenly, the frightened puppies got spooked by something, and they retreated back into the cave … way, way back into the cave!

In fact, they were so far in that the despairing rescuers didn’t think they could reach the cowering pooches. There was only one thing left to do:

Get a long pole with a harness at the end, and hope one of the rescuers could crawl in far enough to hook one of the little tykes! They’d have to repeat the process again and again, too, until each pup was saved.

It was such a difficult process, and very dangerous because the cave – buried a good 18 feet into the earth – was in danger of collapse!

But these wonderful animal lovers weren’t about to be deterred. They knew these puppies could make for amazing pets one day … if they could just get them free.

So, they went to work, extracting each terrified puppy as quickly and as humanely as possible. Because the pups were so scared, they cried like crazy at first, but they quieted down after some petting.

All told, the team got 9 petrified puppies out of the deep cave! The last one, the little runt, actually came without a fuss; it was as if he knew his brothers and sisters had already been rescued!

It had been a long day but as any animal rescuer knows, the rescue is only the first step.

Afterward, they had to find a foster mommy dog for the pups (they did; her name is Olive) and then they started searching for permanent homes.

This might be the most epic rescue you’ll ever see … if you don’t have a few tears in your eyes by the end of this video, check your pulse!

However, challenges regularly pop up in the course of their work. And sometimes, those challenges can be potentially deadly…

A recent call came into the office to inform the group about a stray that was wandering in the desert.

The group had no idea what they were walking into, but they of course quickly headed out to see what they could do.

They were obviously concerned, given the extremely harsh conditions in which the poor stray was roaming.

Finally, after some searching, Eldad was able to track the desperate dog down.

She was clearly having a hard time surviving in the boiling heat of the desert, and she appeared to have a limp, too.

They tracked the pup until she started drinking out of a mud puddle, which was a hugely dangerous idea, given the toxins and bacteria that might be in there!

They knew they had to act fast, but their attempts to lure her with food proved to be in vain, as the dog was absolutely terrified of humans.

Eldad and his team were left with no choice but to call in the help of a local vet; specifically, a mobile vet station.

The vet arrived and managed to successfully tranquilize the pooch but again, that wasn’t the end of the rescue.

Still petrified, the dog took off even after being tranquilized! She just refused to trust humans, as you can tell.

But eventually, the tranq drug did its work, and the rescuers were finally able to scoop her up and get her some much needed care.

Over time, she began to improve and blossomed into a truly beautiful dog.

They named her Venus and after her treatment and time to grow accustomed to people again, Venus is searching for her forever home.

Here’s hoping she finds it sooner rather than later! This poor creature has been through enough, don’t you think?

Who knows how much longer she could’ve survived out there in such horrifying conditions?

Well, it’s all in a day’s work for the Hope for Paws team, though that doesn’t make their efforts any less amazing!

Being on your own is a scary thing, and it makes you even less likely to be trusting. After all, there’s nobody there to hold your hand when things go wrong.

Nobody knows this better than a little dog named Oakley who was found roaming the streets, dirty and alone, tired and terrified.

Eldad Hagar, founder of Hope for Paws, an animal rescue group in Los Angeles, California, has dedicated his life to helping such animals trust again.

Once he heard about Oakley, he headed out to try to save her life.

H knew that to do that, he would have to earn her trust. But how on earth do you do that with a dog that runs screaming as you approach…?

A lot of people would have given up after a day or two of trying and failing to make friends with a dog that obviously had no intention of ever trusting a human again.

But not Eldad! He was determined to rescue this poor pup.

He knew that beneath that gruff and dirty exterior was a terrified little dog that just needed to be loved.

So, he kept trying. And eventually, late one dark night he got close enough to the little dog to get a leash on her.

Poor Oakley. She had finally decided to trust a human again, and look what had happened. He had trapped her!

She began to fight the leash and then just leaped into the air and ran as hard as she could away from Eldad.

What did he do? Well, he knew that fighting Oakley would just make her more terrified and afraid to trust.

So, instead of tugging on the leash and exerting his dominance, he simply trotted along behind Oakley.

He let her decide where she was going to go, and how fast.

Once she realized that the strange man wasn’t trying to hurt her, Oakley sat down and just looked at him, trying to figure out what the catch was.

Eldad sat on the ground, getting down to Oakley’s level, and said the words that all of us long to hear when we’re alone and frightened.

“It’s OK,” he told her.

And Oakley must have believed him. She took one step closer to him…

And then she took another. And another…

Until finally she was allowing Eldad to pet her and tell her again that everything was going to be okay now.

Eldad kept reassuring Oakley that they were going to be friends, and everything was going to be all right.

But, he told her, she was going to need a bath pretty quickly.

“You smell like you’ve been on the street for a long time,” he said as he gently loaded her into the passenger seat of his car.

Still, he kept petting her and showing her affection.

Once back at the shelter, they headed for the tub.

As frightened and unsure as Oakley must still have been, she behaved like a perfect lady as the soap and water soaked into her filthy fur.

It was hard to tell exactly what Oakley really looked like, when she was covered with all the grime and dirt from the streets.

But soon that dirt and grime went down the drain, leaving behind a snowy white Oakley!

Before long, Oakley began to relax a bit and enjoy the attention.

She must have once belonged to someone who had lovingly bathed her before!

Throughout the whole process, Eldad kept reminding her how beautiful she was going to be once the bath was over.

He continued to promise her that her life was about to get good again.

And by this point, Oakley very likely believed him.

She had decided to trust again!

Eldad had done the near impossible, and with nothing more than kind words and gentle hands.

Look at the adorable beauty that emerged from the grooming room!

After making so many promises to Oakley, Eldad didn’t want to make her feel like he was letting her down, so he took her home with him.

She was exhausted after the drama of her rescue and the grooming, so she dropped right off to sleep.

I’ll bet her dreams were good ones for the first time in a very long while!

Rescuers know that when they’re trying to catch a terrified stray, they have to be extremely careful.

Take this recent Hope for Paws case, for example:

A concerned citizen contacted the rescue organization about a small dog that had been sitting outside an apartment complex for days, scared and crying.

Hope for Paws immediately sent rescuers to try to catch the poor dog, and either find it’s family or find it a new forever home.

They hoped the dog would be so frightened and lonely that she would rush into their arms. But instead, just the opposite happened…and it turned into a very tense situation!

She was so frightened when rescuers approached that she ran up the stairs of the apartment complex; rescuers blocked the stairways and closed in.

They realized their mistake almost immediately when the petrified creature squeezed under the railings of a balcony in an attempt to escape!

Realizing that she was putting her life in jeopardy, the rescuers quickly retreated. They waited with bated breath until the little dog eased her way back to safety.

Then they tried to tempt her with food, but she was too frightened to eat.

Once they thought she was coming towards them, and they breathed a sigh of relief.

But suddenly she jumped off the edge of the stairs and headed for freedom (luckily the stairs weren’t very high off the ground)!

She didn’t run too far away, though, and kept a watchful eye on the people she didn’t realize were trying to save her life.

Finally, after carefully evaluating her reactions, the rescuers realized that she was most afraid of the men in the group.

So, the men moved back and left a female rescuer, Loreta, at the front.

Loreta sat down on the ground, to seem less threatening to the little dog, and offered her pieces of a cheeseburger.

Most of us find cheeseburgers hard to resist, and the little dog proved to be the same.

She edged closer and closer to Loreta until she was finally eating out of her hand.

Slowly and carefully Loreta reached out and captured her.

The little dog shrieked and wailed in fear, but slowly settled down when she realized she was being petted and loved instead of hurt.

It had taken Loreta almost an hour but finally she had the dog on a leash, and safe. The crowd of rescuers gave a quiet round of applause for a job well done!

They decided to name the little girl Saigon and were thrilled when the vet gave her a clean bill of health.

The biggest hurdles had been cleared. Now, to find her a home where she would never have to worry again about being abandoned!

Blessedly, with help from Cause For SB Paws she now has a loving forever home!

Saigon is loving her new life and has a big backyard that she just loves. And she loves her new owners, too.

They recently received a random text message along those lines, and another adorable pup’s fortunes have been changed as a result.

Here’s what popped up on Eldad’s phone one day:

“Hello, just wondering if you could help this stray dog. It’s a three legged female.

She’s been living in front of this one house for that [sic] past five months. I thought she belonged to home owners but I asked and they said no.“

Eldad and Loreta would immediately take a trip to check it out, and the message was right on the money.

A beautiful chihuahua was found huddled and cowering in a beaten up old shoe box next to the house. It was just so heartbreaking!

The dog was a little startled to have some unexpected visitors, but she didn’t put up a fuss when the rescuers reached in to help her.

The rescuers named their new friend Princess, and they quickly took her to the vet to give her a once-over.

Princess was also given a much-needed bath, and she seemed to be quite pleased to be finally receiving the attention she deserves.

Don’t you think all animals should be treated with this much love and respect?

Unfortunately, the vet discovered that Princess was extremely anemic, so she wasn’t quite out of the woods.

She had to remain hospitalized for a few weeks, but she has since been released and is doing much better now!

And it didn’t take long for her to find more love and attention, either.

Princess was off to foster care with Smooch Pooch Dog Rescue from that point, but Hope for Paws wasn’t done making a difference for her just yet.

“I wanted to repost the rescue story of Princess in hopes that you will SHARE her story and help us find her a loving forever home,” wrote Hope For Paws on Facebook.

Several users have inquired about Princess already, and we’ll hold out hope that she finds a permanent home before too long.

How can you resist such an adorable face?

And if you happen to be very small, fear is a very big part of your life.

One tiny Chihuahua wandered the lonely streets, fighting for scraps of food and becoming more and more terrified of humans.

So, when Hope for Paws got a call about the frightened little girl, rescuers knew that corralling the scared pup was going to be a challenge.

At first, rescuer Loreta Frankonyte approached very slowly and just tried to be friendly.

She offered the petrified Chihuahua some food but the edgy animal refused to take it from her hand.

On the plus side, the instant Loreta tossed the food on the ground, the dog gobbled it up, which was a good sign. Perhaps try again…?

Finally, the dog, who would later be named ChiChi, trusted Loreta enough to take food from her hand. However, that wasn’t quite enough.

When Loreta tried to pet ChiChi, she snapped at her; she just wasn’t ready to trust humans yet!

Thankfully, however, they were able to snag the little pup and bring her back to Hope for Paws HQ, where everyone did their best to make the formerly homeless stray feel loved.

They scanned for a microchip but unfortunately didn’t find one, which meant they’d have to search for a home for poor ol’ ChiChi.

The team proceeded to clean her up and give her everything she needed so she could enrich someone’s life. Chihuahuas make unbelievable pets, after all!

At long last, ChiChi started to open up and her personality began to glow from within; as it turns out, she was a wonderfully friendly animal!

And she didn’t have very long to wait, either…

Because just one week after being rescued from the cold, mean streets, she was in a loving foster home, where she quickly made friends with another rescue pup.
