When thoughts turn to the four-legged friends of the world, visions of adorable dogs and cats follow.

While it’s true that those members of the Animal Kingdom make for downright awesome pets, there are other species that can be properly domesticated under the right circumstances.

Here’s another amazing example of that…and it isn’t what you expect!

Meet Rylai, a beautiful domesticated white fox from Russia.

If you’re wondering how this is even possible, you’re not alone.

Back in the 1950s, a geneticist named Dmitri Konstantinovich Belyaev became intrigued by the domestication that dogs have gone through since the beginning of time.

He wondered if the same thing could be done with foxes and after a number of experiments, his hunch turned into an incredible reality!

Rylai’s owners adopted her from a licensed fox dealer. As you can tell from the pics, she’s the sweetest thing imaginable.

While there have been some bumps in the road along the way – due to a fox’s inherently mischievous nature – Rylai has fit right in with the family.

She’s even made friends with the family’s other pets, Kratos the dog and Jar Jar the cat, but her owner offers up a caution flag for others whose hearts melted at the sight of this beautiful white fox:

Despite this, her owner doesn’t recommend people own foxes.

As he told one Australian publication:

“I don’t feel that the general pet owner can handle living with a fox.

Many people will buy a fox and then dump it because it didn’t turn out to be like a cat [or] dog.”

That said, others can still find some enjoyment from domesticated foxes, as Rylai has her very own YouTube channel!
