Tiny Dachshund Pulls Off A Miracle To Save His Giant 180-Pound Friend

Anyone who watched TV in the 1950s knows that a dog can be someone’s best friend, especially if you happen to be in trouble.

Lassie pulled off rescue after rescue with her best friend Timmy at his side.

Timmy’s mama knew that when Lassie came running into the yard barking and leaping about, Timmy was in trouble.

In truth, sometimes we don’t pay enough attention to our dogs when they are trying to tell us something…

As a perfect example, one loyal little dachshund tried valiantly one day to get his owner to listen to him.

But, his owner, Tim Chavez, didn’t listen.

He just kept looking for the two dogs that had gotten out of the yard that morning and disappeared: Jazzy, a Saint Bernard and Layla, a pit bull. They’d left Razor the dachshund behind.

Razor immediately sounded the alarm, but nobody noticed. When his owner noticed that Razor was acting strange, he wrote it off to him missing his buddies.

“I went to feed him, and he was kind of going crazy, trying to get my attention,” Chavez said.

Hindsight is always 20-20. But at the time, the owner just didn’t believe Razor knew where Jazzy and Layla were.

And it was time for him to go to work, so he abandoned the search for the other two dogs and patted Razor goodbye.

Razor didn’t just sit at home and fret though. Like a good friend, he immediately went off to seek help somewhere else; he went to a neighbor’s house and barked and barked.

Finally, someone listened.

“He noticed that Razor was kind of running amok, and just causing a scene and trying to get this attention,” Chavez said.

Suddenly Razor took off across a field, running along the edge of an irrigation ditch. The neighbor followed, wondering what on earth the little dog had found…

What Razor had found, was what he’d known all along:

Jazzy was stuck in the cold sticky mud at the bottom of the drainage ditch. Time was running out for her, as she’d been trapped almost 18 hours by that time.

Once the police were alerted the situation, the quiet area was abuzz with flashing lights and sirens.

Next thing you know, eight Belen, New Mexico police and firefighters were pulling off a ditch rescue.

Using backboard straps and a long spine board, just like they would for a person, rescuers saved the 180-pound dog. And guess what?

Razor took every step with them, and oversaw the entire operation, just like the loyal pal he is!

“It’s never happened in my career, and in this business, we see a lot of things.

This is the first time that we participated in something like this,” said Manny Garcia, Belen’s fire chief.

“This is a great story. One I think that is very unique, and one that animal lovers across our state will love,” he said.

Chavez is sorry now that he didn’t pay more attention to Razor’s frantic barking and jumping.

It never crossed his mind that Razor might know where the missing dog was, much less that she was in trouble.

He is so grateful that someone followed Razor, and that Jazzy was found in time to save her life.

He’s glad to have the two of them back home safe and sound, although is still concerned about Layla, who has not yet been found.

“It really means a lot. You don’t really realize how attached you are to your pets until something like this happens,” he said.

He took Razor to a City Council Meeting recently, where the Council honored Razor for his heroism.

Razor accepted the accolades with an “aw shucks” attitude.

After all, he figures, that’s just what friends are for…and maybe one day, he’ll help save Layla, too!
