Deaf Puppy Tumbles Into 50-Foot Hole – 30 Hours Later, Rescuers Get One Last Idea

When a tiny 7-week-old puppy fell through a small hole and tumbled 50 feet down, Karen Smith was frantic.

Karen has three puppies; they’re all adorable Australian shepherd/Catahoula leopard dog mixes. But one, Toffee, was deaf.

Unfortunately, Toffee was the one who fell through the narrow opening and got trapped deep under Karen’s backyard!

Professional rescuers, along with volunteers and even local firefighters, were quickly called to the scene.

But the instant they surveyed the situation, they knew this would be no easy rescue.

Toffee was a long way down and she couldn’t be reached by any normal means. There was no pole that could reach that for, for example.

On top of which, the size of the opening was very small, so very few rescue devices and objects could be lowered inside.

And they couldn’t risk trying to enlarge the hole, because doing so could cause it to cave in, and poor Toffee would be gone forever!

Finally, rescuers decided they’d use an object that doesn’t grab the pup … the pup voluntarily gets inside it.

It was a net, loaded with a little food. A net can be squeezed into the hole and expand a little once its inside, and hopefully the pup would “take the bait,” so to speak.

At first, though, it didn’t work.

Toffee wouldn’t budge, despite sniffing the food. But rescuers knew this was the only plan that had a chance of working, so they kept at it, encouraging the pup to eat.

And at long last, she did!

Toffee stepped into the net to get the food and then, after more than 30 hours of trying and trying, the tireless rescuers were successful.

The pup was hoisted free and everyone broke into applause!

As for Karen, she was in tears holding her rescued pup and as she said on Facebook:

I will never be able to adequately express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire community of people that came to aid in the rescue of my sweet foster puppy, Toffee.

I am humbled, thankful, and amazed at the way the people of North Alabama showed up!!!

Let’s just hope Karen fills that hole, and little Toffee doesn’t inspect any other deep, dark places!
