Roza Katovitch was going through a real rough patch in life.
She lost her boyfriend Rich when he died suddenly of a heart aneurysm. As if that wasn’t a hard enough blow, her father died three days later.
Given all the tragic chaos, it’s not surprising that she was spiraling into deep depression.
As she was spiraling she also became ill, which caused her to lose her job. Then she lost her apartment when the building was sold.
Things just kept getting worse and worse…she has hanging by a thread.
With no home to go to and her depression getting worse by the day, she spent her days at the cemetery at Rich’s grave.
That’s when she first saw the feral cat that would later change her life.
The cemeteries in Colma, California are home to a lot of feral cats where they hunt gophers and mice.
Roza had spent so much time there that she named a few of them.
Feral cats don’t like being touched, but this little black and white cat came right up to her, and she named her Miss Tuxedo.
She described their friendship saying:
“I’d be fixing a vase for Rich, and she’d be pushing her head under my hands. It was like she was saying, ‘No, no, love me.’
Suddenly I had a purpose. I don’t know why, but this cat loved me.“
Having her new friend to care for brought Roza happiness and before long, she felt a little stronger.
She applied for an apartment in an affordable housing unit and was soon given one in a nice complex.
She also has a roommate – Miss Tuxedo.
“I got permission to bring her,” she said. “My doctor said my life depended on it. I guess it does.“
This is the power of the connection humans can feel with animals. It’s not merely companionship; sometimes, it’s a connection that actually saves a life!
