Jennifer Peskey’s husband and kids returned from a drive with some heartbreaking news:
They had found several puppies dumped on an empty country road. They’d been simply left to die and all were in desperate need of assistance.
Jennifer, being the animal lover she is, raced to the scene and found the puppies had been dumped in a small crate, and then left in a shallow ditch.
The puppies were lost and terrified but one in particular grabbed Jennifer’s attention.
This little guy appeared to be in the worst shape of all and perhaps because of his condition, Jennifer quickly named the tiny tyke Blue.
And for some reason, while the other pups were wandering around without difficulty, little Blue didn’t seem to want to move.
But why?
Well, when Jennifer moved closer, she realized what the problem was … and her heart just tore in two.
“Blue was hairless, crusty and red,” Peskey told The Dodo.
“The other three dogs were playing in a pasture but poor Blue was sitting by the crate. The poor thing was so red and he could hardly move.
I felt like he was the one that really needed help. When I first picked him up he was so scared, but once I caught him it’s like he knew he was safe.”
As it turns out, poor Blue “had the worst case of demodex mange the vet had ever seen,” along with a “horrible skin infection!”
Blue’s siblings also suffered from mange but nowhere near to the extent of Blue, which is why the vet was absolutely shocked and appalled by the little pup’s condition.
However, she was hopeful that with enough care and treatment, the adorable pooch would recover.
She gave Jennifer some medications and a special shampoo, and she took the ailing pup home. Then the Good Samaritan set to work:
“We have a pile of shop rags in the barn and he laid on them for three days,” Peskey said.
“He’d get up to go potty and then straight back to the pile of rags. By day five he was moving around more.”
Blue needed antibiotics for a full six weeks and also required multiple baths each day but eventually, Jennifer and her loving family got the puppy on the right track.
And as Blue improved, so did his attitude. Said Jennifer:
“The first month I had him, he was timid and just not sure of anything.
It’s been awesome to watch his confidence grow. He loves to cuddle on the couch and he’s friendly when we are out and about.
He’s just a happy-go-lucky boy and he’s laid-back. He’s still recovering from his skin issues but other than that he’s great!”
Fantastic news!
These days, Blue’s favorite hobbies include cavorting about with this playpals J.J. the cat and Vera the dog.
And now, Jennifer is even planning on writing a children’s book about the amazing puppy’s difficult – but hugely inspiring – story!
This just goes to show that with enough love and dedication, a poor damaged animal can turn everything around and live a life of happiness and contentment. 🙂
