Much like people, some dogs have destinies.
Ruby, labeled “generally unmanageable” and dumped off 5 times at a shelter, had a destiny. She just wasn’t sure what it was.
How could you know your destiny when 5 different people have said, “I don’t want you?”
Well, all it takes is one kind-hearted Good Samaritan to notice something special about you…
That’s what former police officer and current director of RISPCA operations, Joseph Warzycha, saw in Ruby. Something special.
The 8-month-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix really was a handful, but Joseph knew if her energy could be properly harnessed, she could lead a very important life.
With proper training, Ruby could be the best K9 dog ever!
But she’d need a diligent, patient officer who would be up to the task because after all, Ruby really was a little out of control.
Along comes Trooper Daniel O’Neil of the Rhode Island State Police, who had always dreamed of joining the K9 unit.
He dove into Ruby’s training and after 6 long months, O’Neil finally landed a partner and Ruby finally fulfilled her destiny!
Oh, and one more thing:
She got her forever home, too!
Ruby has proven her worth over and over again in the past seven years since joining the unit; perhaps the most memorable event occurred just last year.
Trooper O’Neil and his faithful partner Ruby were called on to locate a missing teenager. He’d been gone for 36 hours and nobody could find him.
But Ruby and O’Neil did!
The boy was in desperate need of medical attention and thanks to the dynamic duo, he was able to get to a hospital and make a full recovery.
And amazingly enough, the boy’s mother had once been a volunteer trainer at the RISPCA…
And she not only remembered Ruby, she was one who helped rehabilitate the unruly dog, and actually saved her from getting euthanized!
See? Destiny fulfilled in more ways than one!
Said O’Neil:
“She brings a little humility to a very negative environment.
When you have a dog that has that emotion of pure love, it is really tough to be in a bad mood.
She just wants to be with you.”
