When reporter Janelle Bludau spotted an anxious stray tied to a heavy chain, she made an instant decision.
She signaled to her KHOU11 camera crew and minutes later, everyone in Houston, Texas knew that decision … and animal lovers everywhere began to applaud.
The story begins when Janelle was outside the Harris County Animal Shelter; over Memorial Day weekend, over 200 stray dogs and cats were surrendered to the shelter.
Janelle was prepared to talk about this, but then she spotted the abandoned pooch on the chain.
He’d been chained to the front shelter gate and it was such a heartbreaking scene. The 2-year-old Lab mix appeared to be in decent health, though.
And when Janelle and her camera crew approached, the pup seemed happy and friendly.
Plus, she was obviously pregnant!
And that’s when Janelle decided that she would stay with the expecting furry mama until somebody arrived at the shelter to let them in. What a fantastic gesture!
Unbelievably enough, the shelter’s director, Dr. Michael White, just happened to be watching the news, and he saw Janelle and the abandoned pup.
When he heard the reporter say she wasn’t moving until someone arrived, White hopped in his car and quickly drove to the shelter.
Less than an hour later, the pregnant pooch was safe inside the shelter’s doors. White then did an X-Ray and found that no fewer than 10 puppies were on the way!
That’s when the shelter director made a snap decision of his own:
He brought the dog – who he appropriately named Janelle – home, so he and his wife could be there when the pup finally gave birth.
“I decided I wasn’t going to leave her there any longer, and I took her home.
I didn’t want her to stay up there in that condition. I hate for animals to give birth in a shelter situation.”

And so, one night less than a week later, the once-abandoned dog went into labor and both White and his wife were ready and waiting:
“My wife and I stayed up with her all night assisting in each delivery.
At 3:36 a.m., [puppy] number 10 was born, and we thought that was it, but number 11 was born at 6:05 a.m.
It was a long night for me, my wife and Janelle.”
But in the end, 11 healthy puppies said hello to the world!
And once the puppies are successfully weaned, White and his team at the shelter will search for a permanent home for her.
All this began with a kind-hearted reporter saw a dog on a chain and swore to herself, “I refuse to leave until someone comes to help!”
Talk about must-see TV! 😀
