…nobody expects it to turn into a harrowing adventure!

It began when Alex Maldonado’s father dropped the family’s adorable Maltese, named Nieves, off at PetSmart for the grooming appointment.

The staff fluffed her fur and trimmed her nails and a few hours later, dad returned to retrieve his beloved pet.

Simple, right?

Well, when dad returned home, his kids noticed something was definitely amiss … there was something off about Nieves.

The pup just didn’t seem right to them for some reason.

And that’s when the whole family realized with a tremendous shock:

This wasn’t Nieves!

As it turns out, the store had groomed two toy Maltese dogs that day, and dad had brought home the wrong pet pooch!

The father laughed it off on social media, as the adventure did come to a pleasant end, but everyone wanted to know:

How had his kids recognized the error?

At first, it was tough. Said Alex, one of the sons:

And nobody could figure out why.

The pups appeared to be in decent condition when they showed up outside the Hospital Aguda in Brazil, but they absolutely refused to leave.

They’d stick around the front of the hospital and occasionally wander in to meet the visitors and staff.

But no matter what, they weren’t going to leave. That much was obvious.

Finally, the nurses decided to look into the matter, to see if they could figure out why the dogs were so insistent on staying.

And what they found out … well, it’ll bring tears to the eyes of all pet lovers everywhere!

The nurses discovered that one of the dogs, named Princess, belonged to a patient that had recently been transferred to that hospital.

The other dog, Scooby, was Princess’ best friend and stayed by her side at all times.

The two somehow knew their sick owner was inside, and they weren’t going to leave him alone!

That’s the tremendous love and loyalty of our four-legged friends, right there.

Well, after the pups were cleared to enter the hospital (a brief checkup was all they needed), the nurses new what to do:

They quickly rushed Princess and Scooby inside, and brought them directly to the bedside of their ailing owner.

That was really what the pooches wanted all along, too, and it was clear they lifted the spirits of the sick man.

But life can be cruel sometimes.

The minute Irma went into labor, her owner Johanna quickly realized something was dreadfully wrong…

Johanna rushed her beloved pet to the vet, where she learned Irma would require an emergency cesarean section.

At first, everyone thought the babies would have at least some chance of surviving. And the mother should make it, too.

But tragically, none of the pups made it. And as you might expect, poor Irma was devastated.

The grieving Corgi went home and nothing seemed to cheer her up. Johanna tried everything but the depressed pup just couldn’t get over her terrible loss.

Then Johanna got an idea:

Irma missed out on being a mom. Well, maybe if she had the chance to be a surrogate mom, she could find happiness again!

And Johanna decided to try something a little unorthodox, too…

She went out and adopted a tiny 2-week-old kitten!

The hopeful owner brought home the little tyke, hoping against hope that Irma wouldn’t mind that she’d be a “mother” to a baby of another species.

Initially, Irma was a little reluctant and somewhat confused by the baby kitty.

But it wasn’t long before the two began to form an incredible bond!

After a while, the two just couldn’t be separated; they wanted to be around each other constantly.

And these days, the once-grieving Corgi just adores the kitten, and does everything she can to make sure the little kitty is safe.

This has really brightened Irma’s spirits as well, so it’s a win-win for everyone involved!

And – POOF! – a poor pup that suffered through a terrible experience got another chance at happiness!

Animal lovers know dogs can suffer from intense negative emotions, just like humans.

Well, Hunter is a 6-year-old pup that was surrendered to the Houston Humane Society; the family didn’t want him because he wasn’t getting along with their new puppy.

So, they decided they didn’t want poor Hunter.

Of course, Hunter didn’t know what was going on until after his family left.

And when he realized what had happened … well, it was just heartbreaking.

Randi Bertholet has worked with the Humane Society for the past seven years, and she remembers first seeing Hunter at the shelter:

“When I walked up to the kennel, at first I didn’t even see a dog in there, until I looked in the corner. I saw him frozen in fear, trying to make himself invisible.

“I immediately sat on the floor, turned away from him, waiting for him to come to me. After a few minutes he cautiously approached me.“

At that point, Hunter let it all out: he realized he’d been abandoned, and that sadness was on full display:

“Ever wonder what a broken heart looks like? Well there you have it.“

Randi did what she could to comfort the depressed pup, and his ordeal definitely affected the long-time rescue volunteer:

“I was so heartbroken for him,” she said.

“I cried that night while laying in my warm bed with my dogs, thinking about him in there alone and scared.“

But some good came from that video of a heartbroken dog…

A whole lot of people saw it online and the adoption offers started pouring in! They’re really piling up!

It shouldn’t be long now before Hunter is with another family, and hopefully one that will never, ever abandon him.

Of all these adoption proposals, you have to assume that one is just perfect for this adorable pooch, right?

But this always remains a stark possibility in a lot of circumstances, as Randi says:

Puppies are supposed to be cheerful, happy-go-lucky creatures but for some reason, Simba never wanted to play.

He showed no signs of love or animation, and he never seemed interested in his human family.

Well, it was sad, but the family ultimately decided that something was wrong, and they couldn’t find a way to help poor Simba.

So, they came to a very difficult decision:

They decided to bring him to a shelter where unwanted animals are eventually euthanized. It looked like the end of the road for sad little Simba…

But it seems the family never entertained an important idea:

Like humans, animals aren’t too happy (or even responsive) when they’re sick.

Could that be it? Could it be that Simba was just suffering from some mysterious illness…?

Well, rescuers at the shelter had the tiny pooch examined and lo and behold, that was indeed the case!

Simba was suffering from a bad fever caused by ticks and in fact, he was barely clinging to life.

You wouldn’t be too smiley if you were fighting to survive, now would you?

Thankfully, though it was tough-and-go for a while, doctors were able to bring Simba around, and the fever at long last disappeared.

And that’s when Simba became the puppy his family had always hoped he’d be!

This has a happy ending, obviously, but never forget:

When an animal isn’t acting normally, chances are, it’s suffering somehow. And if it’s your animal, it’s your responsibility to help!

And every day, he takes the exact same route. It’s as if he’s retracing a well-worn path … as if he’s done it hundreds of times before.

This gorgeous pooch, a white Japanese Akita, belonged to artist Claudio Cantarelli in a small Brazilian town.

Everyone knew and loved Thor, and they all respected Claudio as well.

They’d take long daily walks together and that became like a ritual; all the townspeople fully expected to see Claudio and Thor every single morning.

Said Airton Oliveira, a local hairdresser:

“Every day, for over a decade, Claudio would go out with Thor and walk the same path.“

Sadly, the dog would outlive his master.

Claudio tragically passed away at the too-young age of 58, leaving Thor a lonely orphan.

At first, Thor just couldn’t handle that his beloved owner and companion was gone. As a caring neighbor,  Saionara Freitas, reflects:

“Thor stopped eating when Claudio died.

I was so upset to see how sad he was I asked Claudio’s family if I could look after him.”

Yes, Saionara stepped in to care for Thor but of course, the poor pooch still misses his owner.

And so, every day, the loyal dog walks the old path he and Claudio took, from the vet’s to the lottery to the restaurant. A perfect loop.

Thor religiously follows this path as if Claudio was still alive. It’s a heartbreaking tribute that everyone in town greatly respects.

Adds Saionara:

“I have watched as he lies down outside the clinic where Claudio would stop and chat and sits and waits outside the lottery.

“He looks like he’s hoping Claudio will turn up and I swear I have seen tears in his eyes.”

Thankfully, Thor is feeling much better with his new owner, and he’s getting used to the idea of having a new owner.

And it seems as if his walk actually helps, too.

But above all else, this proves one thing: the undying loyalty of our canine friends. It’s the most incredible thing, isn’t it?

But unfortunately, that’s what happened to a man who decided to go biking in the mountains of Romania.

He was going along just fine until suddenly, he lost his balance and fell … and it was a nasty tumble.

The result was a broken collarbone, which is a very serious injury and doesn’t let you move much at all. And this poor guy was in the middle of nowhere!

Worse yet, the sun was setting, and the chilly Romanian night air was coming on fast. What was he going to do?

Well, he may not have expected to get hurt, but he certainly never expected help to come on four legs!

It was a stray dog, which seemed to appear as if by magic: the pup came out of the bushes and carefully approached the injured man.

Being man’s best friend, the pooch instinctively knew he had to do something … and so he did the only thing he could think of:

He quickly huddled next to the fallen biker in order to keep him warm! Later, officials remarked:

Crystal Kelley, who lives in Indianapolis, Indiana, thought her playful pup might get too rambunctious with her new feathery friend.

“Lily, you leave the birdie alone,” she said. “You need to come inside.”

But Lily didn’t budge. And she also made no move to hurt the tiny bird.

That’s when Crystal realized something was seriously wrong.

For some reason, the bird had stayed in one place the entire time; it didn’t react to Lily’s presence and didn’t even move when Crystal called to her dog.

Crystal got a closer look and gasped: the poor bird was covered in ice!

It was so bad the bird couldn’t stretch its wings to fly away; it couldn’t really even move.

And Lily was begging her owner to help in some way … it just goes to show how kind and helpful dogs can be! They don’t only care about humans, you know.

Crystal wasn’t exactly sure what to do but she knew the tiny bird needed to get a lot warmer. Fast.

Then she got an idea: she ran for her blow dryer, plugged it in, opened the door, and started blowing hot air on the bird.

At first, it didn’t appear to be working, but she figured something out. As she said in a YouTube video she posted:

Well, maybe you think it’s just a cute little stunt. It’s a well-trained pup and it didn’t want to stay behind when his master went out for a ride.

That’s what most passerby thought when they saw Jarrett Little carrying a puppy on his back, as he pedaled through the outskirts of Columbus, Ohio.

But it wasn’t a cute little stunt. And in fact, Jarrett wasn’t the pooch’s master.

Jarrett was part of a biking group that came across the pup and at first, a few of them thought it was a fox. Then when the scared animal started running toward them, they realized it was a stray dog.

He waits outside a hospital and just refuses to move. Hospital staff and patients often try to get her to move, but this pup is determined to stay in one place.

And wait.

Unbelievably, this loyal companion waits for 4 long months for his owner to emerge from the hospital.

At first, most assume the owner is very ill and the hospital just won’t let the dog inside to visit. It is supposed to be a sanitary environment, after all.

But as time wears on, people start to wonder … maybe the news is bad and the lonely pup just doesn’t know it.

And as it turns out, that’s exactly the case:

The dog was owned by a 59-year-old homeless man and unfortunately, after being rushed to the hospital, the stricken man didn’t survive much longer.

Rescuers learned about the orphaned pooch and brought him to a nearby shelter, but the most amazing thing happened:

The dog escaped and ran right back to his favorite spot, in front of the hospital doors!

As resident Cristine Sardella told The Dodo:

“He fled across the city. He walked over 3 kilometers and returned to the hospital.

He would get up to let people pass by, very politely, and then lay right back down again. He was educated and tame.”

But perhaps the most poignant comment was this:

“We have lots to learn from the animals,” she added.

“He waits for him in vain, but the love he has for his owner is eternal.”

Finally, at long last, the dog had to say goodbye to his departed owner, once and for all.

But his story had plucked so many heartstrings; it didn’t take long for him to find a new owner!

The dog, now named Champion, is currently enjoying his happy ending and no pup deserves it more. Dogs really are man’s best friend!
