A Great Dane named Sadie wouldn’t move.

Her owner, Rob Jerry, had just taken Sadie out for her morning walk, which the active pooch usually loves.

But Sadie just kept staring down the driveway, and she wouldn’t come when Jerry called.

That’s when Sadie’s owner followed his pet’s gaze … and he couldn’t believe what he saw!

From a distance, it looked like a hurt deer lying in the driveway.

“I thought that’s what she was just sitting there looking at,” Jerry said.

“And then I listened for a couple seconds and I could hear that it wasn’t a grunt it was a ‘help.’”

Then he got a little closer and realized with a shock:

It was his 89-year-old neighbor, Albert Larson!

The elderly man had fallen on his way to get the morning paper, and the fall had resulted in a broken hip.

That’s what Sadie had spotted and the instant Jerry saw the desperate man, he rushed inside to call 911.

As it turns out, Larson had been lying on the frozen driveway for some time; he’d tried to crawl back to his house, but he’d run out of energy.

Worse still, he’d become stuck to the ice! What an awful situation for an 89-year-old individual!

Well, as Jerry was inside making the life-saving phone call, Sadie held vigil by the injured neighbor’s side.

This is one loyal pooch that wasn’t about to let anything bad happen!

Sadie absolutely didn’t budge from Larson’s side while help was on the way. She was the protector!

And now, after Larson recovers from his harrowing experience, he and his wife will be able to celebrate their 69th wedding anniversary.

All thanks to one of mankind’s best friends … they just keep proving how important they are, don’t they?

Dogs can have incredible impacts on people.

Some have such a dramatic impact, in fact, that one might wonder if these animals are somehow magical. They can forge special relationships with humans nobody can really explain.

Take Nashi, for example. This adorable pup narrowly avoided going to a shelter in Japan, when his owner decided she wanted to keep him.

However, when Nashi’s owner, Hiroko, brought the pup back home and told her husband they were going to keep him, there was a problem:

Her beau, Robert Hamilton, was dead-set against the idea.

But again, dogs are amazing creatures … and it wasn’t long before Robert melted. He came to love Nashi as his wife did, and they took their new family member everywhere.

It was all smooth sailing, until Robert rented a studio to work on his kimono design business. Nashi had to come, of course, but the landlord said very clearly, “No Pets Allowed.”

What were they to do? Nashi had become such a big part of their lives; they couldn’t just give him up.

Robert was nervous when the landlady confronted him and asked him straight-out if he had a dog. But he couldn’t possibly have anticipated how the conversation would go!

From The Dodo:

“On my first day of actually working there, I left Nashi at home and knocked on the landlord’s door to formally introduce myself and give her a gift,” Hamilton said.

“The FIRST thing she asked about was the dog — so I thought I was in trouble.

But it turned out that she just really loves dogs, and she had been waiting to ask to meet him ever since she had heard the first bark.

I ran back home to get Nashi so that she could come around and meet him.”

Amazingly enough, the landlady just thought she was too old to have any dogs, and maybe she didn’t want any around because it’d be too painful for her.

Instead, though, Nashi was the perfect pup: he came right up and said hello. And that was a little hard for the dog, who was normally quiet and reserved.

“He sat quietly and accepted his fate,” Hamilton said.

“By the third time she visited, he knew who she was and was glad to see her.

Nowadays she is one of his favorite people in the world.”

Now, the landlady shows up just about every day to pay Nashi a visit, and she even brings little treats for him. Nashi loves her to pieces, too.

And in fact, the two have formed a very special bond, as Robert explains:

“I trained him in English, so he didn’t recognize Japanese commands before, but he listens to and understands her now.

She is the only person that he will accept a Japanese-language command from. He often tries to follow her home, too.

They really seem to love each other.”

The magical, unrivaled power of our furry friends!

Once you reach a certain point in life, people start treating you differently.

Doctors start to say things like “at your age….” and “as you get older…” and the words start to chafe a little bit.

And you know, the other thing that happens is that you start to feel lonely and maybe you want a furry friend…

When an active, cheerful woman named Mary found herself alone when she was nearing 70 years of age, she decided she wanted a companion dog.

And she wanted to be sure she got one that was just as active as she was.

She traveled a lot and wanted a small dog that could fly in the cabin with her on an airplane, in a crate beneath her seat.

She wanted a dog she could pick up and carry with her when she walked and went on tours.

In short, Mary wanted a dog that could keep up with her! And when she visited the Fluffy Dog Rescue, she fell in love with a cute little 1-year-old Yorkie mix.

She placed her application to adopt and began making her plans. She was a good applicant; she had the financial means and she was perfectly suited to be a dog owner.

After all, she’d always had dogs around! So, she waited for the response telling her when she could pick up her new companion.

Except, instead of an acceptance letter, she received a very confusing note. It read:

“[We have] a philosophy of ‘adoption for life’… we feel there are other dogs that may be more suitable for you.

In your case, it would be a dog aged three or older.”

Mary couldn’t understand how two years could make any difference. Obviously, she would make arrangements for her pet to be cared for in the event of her being unable to do so.

Being 70 years old didn’t mean she couldn’t have the 12-15 years left in her life that the dog she wanted to adopt would possibly have!

“I planned to get a young dog so that it will fly with me and be able to go under my seat and go wherever I go,” said Mary.

“I think they made a very poor judgment, in the fact they don’t know me.”

It’s admirable that the shelter is careful in screening potential homes, but it’s ridiculous to believe that you can put people into tiny slots, when each person and each situation is quite different.

Mary’s daughter, Melissa, emailed the organization about their decision.

“To just write it off because of a number, it was really upsetting,” Melissa said.

Fluffy Dog Rescue sent back another email saying:

“We have established a formula for our older applicants to do our best to accomplish this.

With that said, your mother fits into a category of only being able to adopt a dog that is three years or older.”

Mary still doesn’t understand why she wasn’t allowed to adopt the Yorkie-mix.

“I just feel like I’m a good, loving person, and I could give a lot of love to a little dog, any dog,” she said.

What do you think? Do you think older people should only have older dogs? And can you see a lot of difference in adopting a 1-year-old dog as opposed to a 3-year-old dog?

Do you think each situation should be judged on its own merit?

We hope the little Yorkie mix did find a good home, and we’re sure Mary will find a shelter that will be happy to work with someone offering such an active and fun home to one of their dogs!

Good luck, Mary. We know you’ll be a great dog mom!

Joe Bartley, an 89-year-old man has lived quite a life.

He served in the military, married, worked hard, and is now deserving of a peaceful retirement.

But that’s not what Mr. Bartley wants. Or at least, it’s not all he wants.

After his wife passed away in 2014, he said that he was “bored to death”. He doesn’t like living alone and said he felt as if he was in “solitary confinement”.

So he decided he had to do come up with an idea to get himself out of the doldrums.

He decided to place an ad in the local newspaper.

And not only did he place an ad, he had it highlighted in bright yellow so it wouldn’t be missed.

Mr. Bartley wanted a part-time job. He wanted something to do keep his hands busy, and he’d do ‘anything’.

He closed with the hilarious line, “Save me from dying of boredom!”

His ad got the attention that he was hoping for, too: He started getting calls about his ad the same day; his phone was ringing off the hook!

He had a job interview the next day at The Cantina Kitchen & Bar and was offered a job immediately after the interview, and he happily accepted.

His duties include ‘clearing tables, delivering orders, and anything else that is needed.’ The co-owner of the cafe, Kate Allen, said she knew she wanted to hire him the minute she met him.

“How often do you get an 89-year-old person approaching you and saying ‘I want to work’?” Allen said to ODN News.

“But he’s keen, and we just couldn’t say no. How could we?”

The community applauded the cafe for the decision to hire Mr. Bartley – literally!

They gathered in droves to give him a standing ovation when he walked in to start working his first day.

“He’s lovely, a breath of fresh air. He’s just upbeat and jolly and wanting to work,” cafe co-owner Barry George.

But his new career came to an abrupt end when he became ill and his doctor told him he could no longer work at the cafe.

He never has to worry about dying of boredom, however, as a huge number of people have embraced his amazing story!

Because of his ad, his job, and being such an inspiration, he will not ever be bored again.

The owners of the cafe said, “We’re going to keep him out and about and meeting people.”

They also gave him a special “gold member” card, which means he can eat and drink at the Cantina for free for the rest of his life!

“He’s always going to be welcome here—he’s one of the family,” they said.

An elderly couple in Mercer County, Kentucky found a kitten that had fallen into the water at a boat dock and its little paws were frozen to a rock.

It had been stuck there for 11 long hours and was frantically crying for help!

They immediately dialed 911, and Sheriff Ernie Kelty rushed to the scene, knowing he didn’t have much time before the little cat would die from exposure to the cold.

He couldn’t believe it was still alive at that point, but he quickly assessed the situation and came up with a plan to try to save the freezing cat.

He started by trying to release the icy paws from being stuck so he could try to get him loose. He poured warm water over them and gently pulled as he did to free his paws.

Once the kitten’s paw pads were free from the frozen rock, he cut the fur from his feet that was still stuck.

Then he placed the shivering little cat under the shirt beneath his jacket to warm him, which is both smart and adorable!

After about 20 minutes, the kitten stopped shaking so hard, and he took him out to check him.

The elderly couple was still there, worried sick about the little cat. Sheriff Kelty, wanting to reassure them that it was going to be okay, handed the kitten off to the elderly couple.

Sheriff Kelty didn’t get the kitten back. Taking turns cuddling the cold stray, the couple decided right then and there that they were taking him home with them!

The kitten had been through quite an ordeal, but he now has his forever home. He also got a special name; Ernie, after his rescuer.

Talk about an unbelievable turn of events: He’s about to freeze to death, alone and afraid, and then he gets a loving home in which to spend the rest of his life!

The video below will have you cheering!

It’s never easy when a loved one is at death’s door.

You want to do anything to make that person feel better. You’re willing to grant any wish, if you can.

So when Mona Ahmed heard what her good friend Harold wanted, she knew she had to make his wish come true.

Harold is dying of esophageal cancer that has moved to his liver and lungs; sadly, there is no hope for the sick man.

But when he was asked what could be done for him, he didn’t think of himself. Amazingly, few people on their sickbeds think of themselves.

No, Harold thought of his best friend, a 10-year-old beagle mix named Rowdy.

Harold and Rowdy had become fixtures of a local playground in recent years, and it’s very likely that poor Rowdy misses those outings with his ailing master.

So what will happen to Rowdy when Harold passed on? Well, the first thought that came to mind was moving Rowdy to a shelter.

But Mona just refused to let that happen; she had a better idea.

For the time being, Mona has decided to look after Rowdy because she believes he wouldn’t do well in the tight, confined space of an animal shelter.

She can’t keep him, however, and is actively searching for a home for Rowdy:

“I would like to do a home check to see that Rowdy goes to the right home because I want to make sure about the fence and it will be good if somebody has another dog

…She’s 10 but she still plays like she’s five.

She is such a happy and lovely energetic dog, she really misses her owner and she will, of course, be happy to go to another loving home, somewhere around FRESNO, California or someone who can travel…“

And that’s how you make a dying man happy.

Howard is lucky to have a friend like Mona, who will make absolutely certain that Rowdy has a good home somewhere, and he won’t end up in a shelter.

Lastly, this proves the lasting impact dogs have on humans…in his declining moments, Harold could think of only one thing.

Dog lovers can relate, can’t they?

When Eric stopped by to visit his grandmother, he expected to find cats.

After all, he knew grandma loved cats and she frequently took in strays who needed warmth, food and love.

So when he arrived and saw three cats, he wasn’t surprised at all. There they were, happy as could be, snuggled up in their new home.

But then Eric got a little closer and realized that in fact, there was an imposter among them!

There, sitting all cozy in a cat bed, was a wild opossum. Grandma had even named it Tete.

And Tete looked right at home, too, as if she belonged in the house. Eric was stunned…how had his grandmother missed it? Perhaps her vision wasn’t so good.

So, he gently broke it to his dear old grandma:

“She reassured me it was one of her cats,” Eric told The Dodo. “I told her it wasn’t what she thought it was.“

At first, the grandmother was confused and her grandson just couldn’t control his mirth.

“I laughed for a good five minutes,” Eric said.

“She didn’t realize what I was laughing about until I started pointing out the pointy nose and skinny tail. She didn’t realize he wasn’t a cat.“

He figured the instant his grandmother found out, she’d be shocked and a little horrified, and she’d toss the wild animal back outside.

But to Eric’s surprise, that wasn’t grandma’s reaction at all. No, in fact, she wasn’t about to change her mind!

“She kinda just sat there,” Eric recalled.

“Then she got a little closer … and slowly looked up at me with the biggest grin on her face and said, ‘Well, he hasn’t bothered me yet, so I’m OK with him being here!‘”

Well, it seems the opossum has indeed found a good home…even if she didn’t necessarily need one.

The funniest part is that the cats have totally accepted Tete and everyone gets along swimmingly. Nobody knows how Tete got hooked up with the tabbies but hey, it all worked out.

As it turns out, Grandma’s warmth isn’t just restricted to domesticated animals.

“She loves animals and taking care of them whenever she can,” Eric said.

“It kind of just motivates you to do better and treat other beings better too.“

Let’s just hope that next time, she doesn’t welcome in a wild animal that isn’t quite so docile and friendly!

Living in a neighborhood where everyone knows your name has its advantages.

Sure, some people may stick their noses into your business too much every now and again, but that’s part of the neighborly charm.

For one retiree, he’s developed a walk through his neighborhood that has taken on a special allure of its own.

Harvey Dierf loves to walk, and he’s covered the same 1-mile route twice a day for the last 65 years. Yes, 65 years.

Dierf, 95, is a retired biology teacher and World War II veteran and he obviously has a lot of life left in him.

He’s walked enough miles over decades to give a Fit Bit fits!

Dierf said he doesn’t know what he’d do without his routine because he’s kind of an antsy soul. Also, is wife suffered a stroke a year ago, and is confined to a nursing home.

He believes hanging out with his Plymouth, Minnesota, neighbors is a great way to pass time.

But those twice-daily walks are wearing on Dierf after all these years…

Thankfully, his attentive neighbors noticed his less than peppy pace, and devised an option for him:

Neighbors along his path set out chairs at various points so he could sit, chat and rest along his route.

Talk about the sweetest gesture EVER!

Neighbors enjoy Dierf’s excursions because they say he’s fun to talk with and he’s a great inspiration.

“They say when they see Harvey go by twice a day, they figured they should get out and walk themselves,” Dierf told a television station.

“So maybe I’m having a good effect on some people.”

So why aren’t you getting your lethargic behind out of your chair and taking a neighborly walk already?

If you need more of a boost, watch Dierf here:

It isn’t a crime to dance in the street.

Not enough people do it these days, but 92-year-old Millie Seiver just felt the need to boogie on down the road, so she did exactly that.

When the mood struck her, the surprisingly spry Seiver started moving to the beat outside her apartment building last week.

That’s when a police officer rolled up and noticed the elderly woman dancing by herself, which must’ve been quite the sight.

Sergeant Kim Lenz of the Austin Police Department then decided to do something spontaneously amazing, resulting in the video that people just can’t stop watching.

Yes, Lenz rolled her squad car to a stop, turned up the volume of her radio, and went to join the 92-year-old who obviously needed a dancing partner.

Every now and then, cops contribute to the community in ways that have nothing to do with shooting bad guys.

And it’s not surprising at all to see so many inspirational videos online where police officers are center-stage, doing something of which everyone should be proud.

It’s not just about serving and protecting; it’s about being a role model and doing the right thing at the right time.

In the case of Sergeant Lenz, that just so happened to be busting a move with a cheerful senior citizen in a parking lot.

So be it. Everyone loves it and rightfully so.
