Those left behind can succumb to a little grief when someone leaves the nest, and the same holds true for our four-legged friends.

An adorable story has been making the rounds to help drive that point home, as a loving dad came up with a way to make life easier for one beautiful pup.

A sweet dog named Tara wasn’t quite herself when her best pal Annie Shi went off to college.

And she just couldn’t accept that her loving companion is gone.

Tara still loved to curl up on her friend’s bed to take a nap, and she’d patiently wait for the family to open the door so she could head inside Annie’s room.

But often, once the door was open, Tara would quickly walk away, as she seemed saddened by the fact that Annie wasn’t there.

What to do to help the poor pooch?

Well, Annie’s dad realized what was going on, and he came up with a rather awesome solution:

He decided that he could convert part of Annie’s room into an office and get his work done in there.

This idea provided Tara with the companionship she so longed for, even if it wasn’t Annie.

Now, nytime he heads in there to work, Tara is more than welcome to come inside and feel closer to the friend she misses so much.

Of course, Annie notes that her pops may have had some other ulterior motives when he came up with this solution.

“It might be because he misses me too,” she said.

We’ll concur that’s most definitely the case, but at least Tara and her dad have each other while Annie is away at school.

Little did she realize that it wasn’t just a good idea…it was a decision that would change her family’s life.

The cat she eventually brought home was named Herbie and everyone loved him; he was gentle, friendly, and quiet.

But one night, he suddenly wasn’t so quiet.

Herbie kept jumping onto Janine’s bed and meowing, obviously distressed. He just refused to let Janine fall asleep.

Stranger still, after getting her attention, he’d leap back off the bed, head for the door, and look back at his mom. As if to say, “follow me!”

At first, Janine was just too tired to deal with Herbie’s antics. But his behavior was so out of the ordinary that she finally had to act.

As Janine remembers:

“I was so tired and I was like, all right, he’s just being a cat.

But something said this is not his personality. There’s something wrong.”

She had no idea how wrong until she finally got out of bed and followed Herbie.

The obviously frightened cat led Janine to her baby daughter’s room and when Janine opened the door, she was met with a terrifying sight:

There was her beloved baby girl, Isabella, her face covered by a blanket, making “smothering noises.”

Isabella must’ve rolled over and the blanket was suffocating her!

Amazingly enough, Herbie quickly leaped into the crib and started pawing at the offending blanket, trying to remove it from the baby’s face.

Had mom and Herbie not found her when they did, it’s very likely the baby wouldn’t have survived the night.

Ironically, Janine is a social worker who has actually written papers about the benefits of animal-assisted therapy, and now she’s seen more incredible Pet Power!

“He saved my daughter,” she said. “Herbie really is the hero.”

It isn’t only dogs that can save humans in life-or-death situations! Loyal pets are loyal pets, and that’s that.

A Pomeranian-Poodle mix she lovingly called Chloe.

The adorable pup was a gift from Nicole’s grandmother and the second Nicole saw Chloe, she was smitten. Love at first sight!

But four years later, the Grimes family had to make a very big decision.

Nicole’s father’s landed a great job that allowed him to work from home, but this actually posed a few problems.

Firstly, he needed a home office space and secondly, active Chloe did tend to bark quite a bit during the day.

As as result, it became very difficult for Chloe’s dad to get much work done, so the family decided they had to put poor Chloe up for adoption.

Nicole was devastated. It took her a very long time to get over the loss of her beloved friend.

Eight years later, even though time does heal wounds, Nicole often found herself thinking about Chloe.

So, one day, she started perusing Facebook to see if she might stumble upon a cute dog she could adopt. She needed to fill that void in her life.

After a little searching, she found a senior dog that looked strangely familiar…

The dog looked a lot like Nicole’s long-lost friend and in fact, the pooch’s name was Chloe. Could it be…?

Well, even if it wasn’t actually Chloe, Nicole decided she just had to have this elderly dog; perhaps the name was kismet.

Nicole successfully adopted the lovable dog and as time passed, she realized she had to find out if this really was her old friend.

She brought the dog to a vet to check the microchip number so she could be absolutely certain. She waited anxiously for the results…

And lo and behold, the vet emerged and told her that “new” Chloe and “old” Chloe had the exact same microchip number!

It was indeed the very same dog! It was Chloe!

So now, after 8 long years of being separated, the two best friends are back together again, right where they should always be:

By each other’s side.

Talk about an amazing twist of kindly Fate!

We know exactly what they’re feeling, and we generally can predict their behavior.

So, when Lisa’s beloved dog Luger started barking like crazy in the middle of the night, she immediately knew something was wrong.

Though Luger is a massive 135-pound Rottweiler, he’s usually very quiet and docile, and he certainly doesn’t start barking for no reason.

Lisa crawled out of bed to check on Luger; why was he acting so strangely? What had him so agitated?

Well, she only had to open the bedroom door to find out…

Her entire living room was engulfed in flames!

The fire was spreading everywhere and she knew she had just seconds to act. She needed to get herself and Luger to safety as quickly as possible.

She hurriedly dialed 911, grabbed Luger, and raced out the front door. Not long after, firefighters arrived on the scene to battle the out-of-control blaze.

They extinguished the fire but tragically, the home was gutted. The fire had taken everything…everything but Lisa’s and Luger’s lives!

As she told a local newspaper, the Pickens Progress:

“I’m so blessed to be alive. It could have been so much worse.

If Luger hadn’t made all that noise I wouldn’t have woken up.”

Lisa’s husband, Bill, is also very thankful for Luger. After all, their lovable pooch likes his sleep, so he could’ve slept through part of the fire.

But he didn’t. He was on point and quick to alert mom, which is why they’re both alive today.

Of course, the couple will need to get back on their feet again, but the community has already stepped in to help.

A GoFundMe campaign raised over $6,000 to help Lisa, Bill, and Luger, which has proven to be invaluable.

However, without Luger, there’d be nothing left to rebuild, and no more memories to create.

This is the power of the faithful companion!

Such was the case with a poor 14-year-old dog Diesel, who suffers from blindness.

What’s more, Diesel has been kept chained up outside for his entire life – through two different owners, no less.

That is no way to live, not for any animal…ever!

Zoe Kharasch, founder of Newman Nation: Senior Pets United, caught wind of the situation, and she just knew she had to jump in and do what she could.  

She was discouraged from doing so, but she knew in her heart that Diesel deserved a fighting chance at a happy life.

“When I first expressed my dedication to rescuing him, I was met with a lot of skepticism, even from friends,” Kharasch told The Dodo.

“People said he would never adapt to living indoors, that he should remain on the chain where he was ‘comfortable’ and even that he should just be euthanized.”

Zoe sent a volunteer out to scoop Diesel up, and it didn’t take too long for her hunch to be proven correct.

Diesel was an incredibly loving and sweet pup that seemed to be downright tickled to finally be in the company of folks that really cared for him.

This is one happy pooch!

He was placed in a foster home with some other animals, and he quickly made friends.

His lack of sight hasn’t hindered him a bit, and he absolutely loves entertaining himself with the doggie toys that he’s free to grab whenever he wants.

This is exactly how every dog should live, right? Happy and having fun? Loved and respected?

Well, Diesel is finally in a spot with a family that cares for him, but he’s still in need of a forever home.

The turnaround in his life has been remarkable thus far, and we’ll hold out hope that things get even better for him as he advances in age.

“Diesel is a true testament to the good nature of dogs and how they forgive so easily,” Kharasch said.

It’s one of those things that you actually have to experience to understand completely; the joy of unconditional love is impossible to explain.

Unfortunately, those amazing bonds sometimes come to light in the most heart-wrenching fashion imaginable.

That’s certainly the case for this sad tale that emanates out of Madison, Alabama.

Sarah Bailey was home with her daughter and her beloved beagle named Olly. It was a frigid night, and Olly had to go out to take care of business.

As she always does, Sarah let him out on the porch where he normally waits when the two go for a walk.

However, he didn’t wait this time. Olly left the front of Sarah’s apartment before she got outside, and he wound up in some serious trouble…

There’s a large pond in front of Sarah’s complex that freezes over in the winter, and Olly went walking across it.

But the ice was thin, too thin even for the little beagle, and Olly promptly fell through.

Seconds later, a frantic Sarah was quickly doing all that she could to pull her beloved companion to safety!

However, while attempting to do so, she fell through the ice herself. Thankfully, her cries for help were heard, and a local rescue squad was soon en route.

Finally, after a terrifying struggle, Sarah and Olly were pulled out of the water.

While Sarah was okay, albeit very cold and shaken, that was unfortunately not the case for poor Olly.

He had drowned during the struggle but while Sarah was devastated, she learned something amazing:

Olly had sacrificed himself by keeping himself under her, to ensure she wouldn’t sink. He kept her afloat long enough for rescuers to reach her! 

To make this tale even more heartbreaking, Sarah revealed that Olly was a rescue dog that took some time to win over.

She did just that, and he turned into the sweetest and most loving companion that she could hope for.

No words can describe the pain that she must be going through right about now.

Nonetheless, she has taken the time to share the story of her amazing furry little friend that saved her life.

And the lovely creature she saved turned around and saved her…which is wonderfully poetic, when you think about it.

That sentiment applies to our furry little friends as well, as this incredible tale from the UK demonstrates:

Clyde, a 4-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, was out in the backyard of his home one morning.

He was a well cared-for and happy pup but he had an itch…

And when he noticed that the back gate was open, that was all he needed to see.

The adventurous canine decided it was high time for an adventure!

So, he escaped out the gate and went to do a little sightseeing. But he didn’t just wander into the woods; he wound up by the Hengoed Railway Station!

Clyde wasn’t about to come this far without pushing the envelope even further, either.

He would amazingly hop on a train headed for the town of Bargoed, and he quickly made fast friends with all the passengers on board.

All the while, though, his frantic owner was desperately trying to locate her four-legged friend. She dropped a post on social media explaining the situation.

As luck would have it, a passenger on the train saw the post. The ruse was up from that point: Clyde was busted as a runaway!

The train conductor was informed of the situation, and Clyde was treated to a seat in the driver’s compartment for the remainder of the journey.

British Transport Police met the train at the next stop, and Clyde was reunited with his family soon thereafter.

Joanne Davies, Clyde’s owner, recounted the experience in another post on social media.

“It was the longest 3 hours of my life,” she wrote.

We’re going to guess that Clyde felt the same way, and we can only hope that he got a ton of snacks after getting home for some much-needed rest after his eventful day.

But hey, when you gotta roam, you just gotta roam!

That age-old pearl of wisdom carries with it a ton of truth, and this awesome little clip drives that point home.

A family was out on a tour of a property on Goat Island in Australia, and they were having a nice leisurely trip until…well, they had a very close encounter!

The property is home to a number of crocodiles, and the owner would call out for a reptile named Casey to come and join the party.

Before you knew it, Casey emerged from the water and flopped on the ground.

Having a huge croc that close must be a little unnerving but it was even more annoying for the family’s pet, a little toy dog.

The little pup didn’t take too kindly to Casey’s presence, and it proceeded to go absolutely ballistic.

The croc was well-trained and of no harm to the guests, but the pup wasn’t taking any chances, so she rushed right in!

The dog’s owner couldn’t believe what she was doing, but she couldn’t stop it, either.

The brazen pup flew at the massive reptile, totally unafraid! If Casey had wanted to, he could’ve ended the poor dog’s life in a flash.

But Casey didn’t want any trouble with the little menace.

The croc sized up the situation and responded by hightailing it back into the water.

Looks like the croc made the right call, as this little pup simply wasn’t messing around!

The next time the family goes on vacation with their little friend, they can be sure of one thing:

No matter what they face, their furry little friend will protect them…no matter how big!

He’s the perfect companion except for one thing – he hates baths. And because he hates baths he thinks everyone else in the household loathes them just as much.

“The bathtub is the bane of his existence,” Rebecca said.

The family just moved into a home that has a bathtub, but in their old home, they just had a shower.

Clark never seemed to be upset that they got in the shower but apparently, he has a real issue with this big porcelain tub.

Each time a family member takes a bath he feels he needs to comfort them because he knows what it’s like to be in that horrible thing!

So he does the only thing he can think of that makes him feel better:

He brings them his favorite green toy!

He shows up with a concerned look on his face knowing that they have to be completely miserable and showing pity on his face for them.

“He wants to save us from the bath,” Rebecca said.

“He stays for a good five minutes. This is the torture part for him and he’s super upset and sad.”

Then he offers the only thing that helps him when he’s forced into the porcelain monster and grabs his green toy and slips it into them.

“He wanders off and returns after a few seconds with his green toy and plops it in the tub, to which he immediately cheers up!” Rebecca said.

“It’s all he has to give and he does it every time. He is so sweet.”

“After he drops his toy in we offer it back and he won’t take it, ever (but we still try). We always tell him what a good boy he is and give him a pet.”

But it must be noted that Clark never offers his favorite toy at any other time, so this makes his special gesture even more adorable!

They simply leap into action without even giving it a second thought. That’s what heroes do, after all.

Many times, this selfless act comes at the expense of their own personal safety but again, they’re not thinking about themselves.

Such was the case when a raging fire broke out at a home in Temple, Texas.

Firefighters were quickly on the scene, but it turned into a roaring blaze that took quite a bit of time to extinguish.

Thankfully, the family was able to make it out of the home unscathed.

Neighbors had gathered outside to provide the family comfort, but the priorities would quickly shift once a distinct barking was heard coming from the backyard of the burning home.

The family had gotten out of the house but they’d forgotten one precious thing!

It quickly dawned on everyone that the family’s dog, Harley, had not made it out and was still trapped behind the flames.

That’s all a number of Good Samaritans needed to hear, as they barreled towards the backyard intent on their mission.

The brave souls leapt over the fence to find that Harley was just feet from the blaze, and they gave nary a thought to their own safety as they rescued the terrified pooch.

It was a dicey situation as the house was in full blaze at that time, and any part of the structure could come raining down in big fiery chunks.

But thankfully, it all worked out; nobody was hurt.

Harley suffered some singed fur, but he’s going to be just fine. He was quite enthusiastic when he was reunited with his family, too, as his tail was wagging a mile a minute.

Houses are just things that can be replaced; Harley could never be replaced, and his family knew it!

Hats of to the Good Samaritans who brought Harley to safety!

As for the family that lost their possessions in the frightening blaze, they can at least take solace that everyone is safe, including their furry little friend.

That’s what really matters.
