At first, rescuers don’t understand why he’s so scared … then, a video emerges that shows a horrific crime.

And this dog saw everything!

If you didn’t know, Lebanon’s current president, Michel Aoun, recently passed a new animal welfare law that banned the torture and abuse of animals.

However, despite the law, workers from the Municipality of Ghobeiry brought food laced with poison to feed to a family of stray dogs.

How sick is that?!

Sadly, as soon as the dogs ate the poison, they started to die. Onlookers were horrified.

One of them filmed the event and made sure that Animals Lebanon, a local animal welfare organization, received a copy.

“The video is quite graphic,” Maggie Shaarawi, vice president of Animals Lebanon, told The Dodo.

“It shows men dressed in municipality uniforms putting food mixed with poison for friendly dogs who come with wagging tails to eat.

Shortly after, the dogs are shivering on the ground.”

The only dog that survived was the one that ran away from the men, instead of towards them.

Everyone who saw the video was shocked, including the president himself.

He posted a photo of himself with his dog on Facebook, along with a statement condemning the way the workers had dealt with the stray dogs.

“The most heartbreaking scene is when one of the dogs approaches the men, almost asking for mercy for his friends who are dying,” Shaarawi added.

“The man didn’t stop there or feel any mercy toward that friendly dog…

…instead he put food on the end of the stick mixed with poison and shoved it in his mouth.”

Talk about disgusting. It makes you want to scream, doesn’t it?

Out of the large group of friendly but unclaimed animals, only one dog in the family survived:

The one dog that didn’t come running out to meet the men.

Indeed, his fear of humans actually saved his life.

When Shaarawi learned of the one survivor she immediately sent a team to find him and bring him to the shelter.

They started calling the dog “Survivor” because his existence was such a miracle.

“He was very scared, and he had his tail between his legs,” Shaarawi said.

“He kept running away. But Kamal, one of our volunteers on the ground, is known for his persistence.

He kept following him until finally he was cornered.”

Once Kamal had captured the dog, he took him to a local vet clinic for a complete checkup.

Thankfully, Survivor turned out to be in good health, despite having lived on the streets for so long.

He had never trusted humans, and now he had even less reason to.

After all, humans had killed all of his family and friends!

And now they had captured him and were, in his mind at least, keeping him prisoner…

“He was very fearful, and he would shake any time someone came near him,” Shaarawi said.

“We took him to our care, and every day we tried to gain his trust.”

It was a long slow process.

They patiently spent time with him, giving him treats and letting him learn that humans could indeed be trusted.

Under their constant care and attention, Survivor slowly blossomed into a confident, happy dog.

Now, not only has Survivor come out of his shell, but his rescuers have discovered that he will make someone a lovely pet.

“He is an adorable dog — smart and gentle,” Shaarawi said.

“He is toilet trained, rarely barks and all he wants is human company.”

He’s a long way from the timid, fearful dog that hid in the bushes instead of taking treats from human strangers.

Thank goodness he didn’t take those “treats,” though!

“Every time I go to see him, he is almost dancing from happiness,” Shaarawi added.

“His whole body is shaking right and left.”

On June 25, temperatures were soaring and everyone was trying to stay cool. That went double for our furry friends.

But unfortunately, some four-legged creatures aren’t blessed with caring, loving owners.

York City Center police officers got a call that two dogs were trapped inside a blazing hot car, and the owner wasn’t anywhere in sight.

Nobody knew how long the owner had been gone, but it was obvious that both dogs – adorable Labradors – were suffering.

How much longer could the poor pooches last inside that baking metal oven…?

Well, the cops found the doors locked and they couldn’t immediately locate the negligent owner. So, they made a snap decision:

They knew the pups wouldn’t last much longer, and they had to do something drastic…

In a flash, they smashed the driver-seat window to get into the parked car, and reached the dying dogs!

It was so hot inside the car that even the officers had trouble breathing … can you imagine what it must’ve been like for those poor animals?

The pups were quickly rushed to a nearby veterinarian to be treated for obvious heat exhaustion, and they remained in the care of the RSPCA for quite some time.

And in the meantime, the police department wrote on Twitter that “the owners will be prosecuted,” and added:

“There is no excuse for this, I am utterly appalled…“

The RSPCA also had a response to this terrible event:

“A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly, even when it doesn’t feel that warm.

When it’s 22 degrees (71 °F), in a car it can reach an unbearable 47 degrees (116 °F) within the hour.”

They added that “dogs die in hot cars” and sadly, this happens all the time, in all parts of the world.

But as the police said, there’s just no excuse for this!

Thankfully, the cops acted strongly and just in time … nobody cares about a person’s property when the lives of innocent animals are on the line!

And usually, they are. But every once in a while, you hear a nightmare story … and the animal lover in you is outraged.

Such is the case here:

Bridget Woodson, a volunteer at an Indiana animal shelter, didn’t realize that shelter cats were disappearing at first.

Then one day, she was told to do something absolutely abominable:

She was told to kill a sick cat by putting it in the freezer!

And she wasn’t asked just once; she was asked twice. Thankfully, she refused both times, but this prompted her decision to quit.

Woodson initially was too afraid to go to the police because of retaliation from the management but luckily, her conscience got the better of her.

But this isn’t true at all.

The American Veterinary Association’s euthanasia guidelines specifically states that hypothermia is NOT an acceptable method.

The Spencer County Sheriff’s Office immediately opened an investigation into these allegations and horribly, they’re true.

The shelter did in fact kill multiple animals by freezing them alive!

And isn’t it so much worse when the dog’s puppies are thrown away, too?

This is what animal rescuer Josiane Almeida stumbled upon when she was walking along a deserted road in Lagoa da Prata, Brazil.

Almeida saw the dog tied up to the neck, suffering in a coarse sack. There were also three trapped puppies inside as well, and one just wandering around.

It was a truly terrible sight.

Almeida rushed forward and as she says:

“Some of the worst scenes of mistreatment I’ve ever witnessed.

They’ve been there for quite some time.”

The mamma dog was terrified at first but Almeida gently calmed her down, and convinced her that she was there to help.

Then she carefully carried the sack to her car before cutting it open, and seconds later, the entire canine family was freed.

But they still needed urgent medical assistance, so Almeida rushed them all to a local vet’s office.

There, it was determined that in addition to being malnourished, the mother dog had a very big problem:

A cancerous malignant growth!

That could be why she was dumped in the first place; her previous owners just didn’t want to deal with her illness, so they ditched her!

This story just goes from bad to worse, doesn’t it?

However, the good news is that all the pups are currently getting the care they so desperately require, and they will soon be off to loving homes.

It’s only going to take a few kind-hearted souls to adopt them, and after over 140,000 shares and 11,000 comments on the video Almeida shared, that probably won’t take long!

Who wouldn’t want to give these traumatized pups the attention and love they need?

In the meantime, Almeida is taking care of them, and she’s just the right person to do it!

Plus, she thanks God for allowing her to be in the right place, at the right time:

“Before, this family was smothered in a sack tossed out to die, but as God is good, we managed to get them out of suffering! 

They live well with me today!

Thank you, God, for giving me this opportunity.”

Stranded and abused animals don’t always get happy endings. But when they do, it’s worth telling the world about!

He just didn’t realize how bad it was until he checked her teeth…

It began when Mutt Scouts founder Nikki Audet heard about an abandoned dog, and rushed to the scene in Tijuana, Mexico.

There she found an exhausted, beaten pooch, sitting on top of a pile of trash.

It was such a heartbreaking sight: the dog had many scars on her skin, and her belly sagged from multiple pregnancies.

Nikki knew this pup needed immediate help, so she scooped him up and raced over to the local vet’s office.

That’s where she learned the awful truth about this pup’s horrific past:

“The vet said he had just had another dog come in who was attacked and the wounds were exactly the same as hers.

Her teeth were all filed down so she couldn’t fight back, some are ground right down to the root. She was just attacked constantly.”

Yes, sadly, this poor creature was used for dog fighting!

On top of which, the 5-year-old pooch was infested with fleas and ticks and needed lots of medicated baths, along with antibiotics for any lingering infections.

Her dog fighting days left her open to a great many problems, after all.

But the good news is that this pup, who they named Sophie, started to improve rapidly and before long, her adorable personality came shining through.

“She absolutely loves people,” said Nikki. “She even gives us hugs. She is just the sweetest girl.”

The only downside is that Sophie is still terrified of other dogs. And rightfully so, given her past.

So, it’s going to take some time for Sophie to realize that other pups aren’t going to attack her, but Nikki says this must be taught “very slowly and patiently.”

Sophie will start working with a trainer as well, so the future is looking bright. Added Nikki:

“I’m super excited for her to move on to a great life.

It’s like she almost can’t believe that she’s finally out of that awful situation and all these nice people are paying such good attention to her.

She is so grateful. You can just see it.”

Yes, we can, and it’s a beautiful sight!

She’s apparently stuck on a log in a remote part of the Erie Canal, and she’s struggling to keep her head above the rising waters.

A pedestrian happens to spot the desperate pup, and quickly calls the local Animal Control.

And when the first officer arrives on the scene, she realizes that the shepherd-husky mix seems perched on the log and unable to escape.

But why?

The pooch looks healthy enough; it doesn’t appear injured or sick, and it really is trying hard to break free from the log.

Then the officer gets close enough and spots something horrible:

The dog is tied to the log with her own leash!

Someone had intentionally tied the poor animal to the dog and left her to drown!

The officer leaps into action; she rushes forward, untangles the leash, and frees the terrified pup just in time.

Just ask a poor pup named Liszka. Her abusive owner left her locked in a cage that was far too small for her, and showed her no care or affection.

There Liszka languished, with barely enough food to survive, suffering in a rusty, horrible cage.

And you can also imagine that such a prison has other terrible side effects…

The rescue team from OTOZ Animals discovered that soon enough when they arrived on the scene.

They’d been called to the site after concerned neighbors alerted the group to Liszka’s situation, so the team rushed to help.

Well, they found the terrified pooch in the cramped cage, and they immediately moved in to free her.

Said one of the rescuers:

“She was lying and waiting for death. She was somewhere between scrap and waste.”

But it got even worse when they opened the cage because they realized that Liszka couldn’t come out to greet them…

In fact, she couldn’t move much at all!

After sitting in that horrible cage for days on end, the dog had developed muscular contractures and could no longer walk.

This is just unforgivable, isn’t it, fellow pet lovers?

The good news is that vets went right to work, massaging Liszka’s muscles every single day until she could regain some of her mobility.

And blessedly, the treatment has been working.

The rescued pup still can’t walk or run normally just yet but she’s relearning those mechanics at a rapid pace, and things are definitely looking up!

The team says, “every day you see improvement,” and you really couldn’t ask for a better result.

Thanks to the diligent, hard-working rescuers and doctors, Liszka should finally become a happy, healthy pup once more!

And after that, let’s hope she finds a loving home, with humans who will finally treat her with the proper respect.

As for her former abusive owner … well, we say arrest that person. Wouldn’t you agree?

The dog wasn’t just chained up … she was literally hanging by that chain!

The chain was just way too short and the appalled neighbor rushed for the phone. This poor pooch needed immediate help!

Later, rescuers from Territorio de Zaguates in San Jose, Costa Rica would learn the sad story behind this pup, named Cala.

Cala’s owner rarely gave her enough food and never took her to the vet, and he kept her on a dangerously short chain for most of the day.

At first, pedestrians think it’s a litterbug, who had tossed a black bag of trash onto the street.

But then a few get closer and realize that it isn’t a trash bag; it’s a furry little blob, and it’s actually moving…

One concerned pedestrian runs up and realizes that it’s a very small pug!

The little pug is hurt and scared, so the Good Samaritan quickly calls the RSPCA’s Millbrook Animal Centre for assistance.

Rescuers are on the scene in moments and the pug, which they name Peggy, is rushed to a local veterinarian.

Soon after arriving, they’re thankful to learn that though bruised and battered, Peggy hasn’t sustained any major damage from her tumble.

On the downside, however, it’s clear that her owner had treated her poorly. Well, no surprise there, right?

Peggy is malnourished and underweight, and she’s missing patches of fur. But there’s something else, too…

The vets realize that the female pug had been used as a breeding dog in a puppy mill!

And after Peggy had been all used up, and couldn’t breed anymore, her evil owner launched her out a moving vehicle!

How sad is that?

Said the Center’s deputy manager Liz Wood:

“Mentally you could see she was scarred too, you could see the sadness in her eyes — God knows what she’d been through for most of her little life.

I suspect she’d been kept as a breeding machine to produce puppies which could be sold … for large numbers.

Then, when she came to the end of her shelf life, they discarded her like rubbish. It’s heartbreaking and utterly despicable to treat a dog like a disposable object.”​

Well, Liz was just so heartbroken over Peggy, she decided she’d take the abandoned pug home with her.

And over time, the previously abused pup started her comeback; now she’s happy and healthy, and her future is so much brighter.

Said Liz:

“We’re starting to see her cheeky side now.

She barks when she wants food and she makes funny little grunting noises when she is pleased to see you — her whole body wags, it’s adorable!

She’s such a sweet dog and will make a wonderful companion for someone.”

Here’s hoping!

This is one pooch that absolutely deserves respect, affection and love for the rest of her days, so a warm-hearted owner needs to step up.

But this story is enough to make animal lovers see red, isn’t it? The fact that people out there can treat animals this way…

It’s just impossible to understand!

After all, it happens all the time.

People accidentally forget their belongings, especially when traveling. But the suitcase was in a strange spot…

It had been dumped on the side of the road, which is a weird place to forget your luggage.

And then, when the vet got a little closer, she spotted something sinister: air holes!

Somebody had poked air holes in the suitcase and there could be only reason for that:

They’d left an animal inside!

Well, being a vet, this kind soul couldn’t possibly ignore the bag any longer. So, she approached and carefully unzipped the suitcase.

She wasn’t prepared for what jumped out, that’s for sure!

15 kittens!

That’s right, 15 kittens of all different kinds; tabbies, grays, black-and-whites, all stuffed inside and left to die.

The air holes were a nice thought but obviously, without food or water, these little tykes wouldn’t have lasted very long.

The vet was instantly smitten, and she rushed all the kittens to the Cats Protection Hornchurch & District Branch for immediate attention.

As the shelter’s Welfare and Homing Officer, Alison Gambles, told Inside Edition:

“Sadly, the case was found [standing] up, which meant the kittens would have all been laying on top of each other.”

It really had been a terrible situation for the furry babies.

But the good news was that besides a few eye infections, most of the kittens appeared to be in decent condition, so they couldn’t have been there for very long.

The vet thinks the kittens were dumped by a greedy breeder, as the kitties were from three or four different litters.

Added Gambles:

“…people find they have more kittens than they can cope with because they haven’t had their cats neutered.”

Yes, well, it was their mistake and their responsibility, right?

But at least these furry cuties won’t have to worry about dying alone; all of them will be up for adoption once they’re old enough.

And it’s all thanks to a kindly veterinarian, who got a chance to do her job … before she ever got to work that day!
