For Officer Jeff Gonzalez, it was just like any other day on the job.

He was patrolling through Germantown, Wisconsin, a mostly peaceful place, where crime isn’t necessarily a big problem.

But just when Gonzalez was starting to get a big bored, something odd caught his attention along County Line Road…

Nothing “explosive” or dangerous, per se…just something odd. Whatever it was, it was strange enough to make Gonzalez perk up and take a closer look.

And what did he find?

A lone black dog alongside the road, barking and darting about frantically, as if he was trying to tell the police officer something. In fact, he was trying to get anybody’s attention!

But there wasn’t anyone around to listen and Officer Gonzalez figured the dog needed urgent assistance, so the cop pulled over and stepped out of his cruiser.

That’s when the dog, whose name was John Boy, increased his antics and started bouncing away from the officer, as if to say, “Follow me, follow me!”

And so, the increasingly curious officer did exactly that: He followed the agitated pooch up to the front porch of a house.

And that’s when the policeman realized that John Boy was a real-life Lassie…and he was facing a real emergency!

John Boy’s owner was sitting in a chair, slumped over and unresponsive.

Gonzalez believes the woman had been in the chair for almost an hour with temperatures hovering about 3 degrees.

“To be honest with you, I thought she was dead,” Gonzalez told a local TV station.

“And when I went up, she was very cold to the touch; her lips were blue.

But I was able to determine she was breathing and had a pulse.

I called for assistance, and my partner was close. So together we got her in the house.”

Sitting idle for an extended time in such cold temperatures can kill a person, so this woman was VERY fortunate she was found!

Doctors at the emergency room discovered the woman had a heart condition, but said she would be fine after the close call.

Her daughter, Tianne Wendt, burst into tears after finding out what happened.

“It was a miracle,” said Tianne. “My mom had two angels save her that day.”

One of those angels is John Boy; the Labrador Retriever is in fact a rescue dog!

Surprisingly, John Boy had struggled to find a proper home. Three other people owned him and didn’t stick before he found his forever home.

Oh, he found it all right, and he repaid the favor!

As for officer Gonzalez, he is appropriately being heralded as a hero for his efforts to save the woman.

However, he quickly brushes off such praise and says John Boy deserves the credit for his determination and loyalty.

The angels sent to save the day here prove regular people, and loving and faithful pets, can be a blessing to those in need!

There’s nothing like being a mother.

Being a mother means putting the needs of your babies before your own, and loving them no matter what.

Being a mother means risking it all for the sake of your sons and daughters, no matter how dangerous the situation.

Any good mother, human or animal, knows this to be true. Take this as a perfect example of maternal love:

A bunch of kids were playing near a construction site when they discovered six very tiny puppies.

They weren’t more than a day or two old and they were huddled together for warmth. There was no parent in sight, either.

The children wanted to help so they brought them home, but their parents realized the ailing puppies needed instant help.

That’s when they called Hope for Paws and when the team arrived, they went back to the construction site to see if they could find the mother.

Amazingly, they did.

The poor mamma emerged, scared and starving, and the rescuers tried to give her some food. Obviously, she was very hungry.

But she wouldn’t touch a morsel of the offered food.

And when the rescuers decided to bring her in, she growled when they put a leash around her neck. Though she was alone and starving, she didn’t want to leave!

That’s when the team realized what had to be done:

They had to show mamma that her babies were safe.

They brought the terrified dog over to her puppies and everything changed instantly! As soon as she saw her babies, the mother quickly became friendly.

And yes, she started to eat like crazy!

After that, the rescuers brought the reunited canine family to the vet, so everyone could get a thorough checkup.

Thankfully, all the little pups were healthy, as was the mamma, despite being somewhat malnourished.

The mother received the beautiful name of Navalina and her puppies were named: Valencia, Bergamot, Ponderosa, Satsuma, Mandarin and Clementine.

The names aptly fit as the brood turned out to be some of the sweetest pups ever!

Now, three weeks later, Navalina and her puppies are all safe and sound in foster care.

The puppies are getting bigger, and fluffier, every single day, and before long they’ll all be up for adoption. …you know you want one, too!

Navalina, once angry, hungry and lashing out, proved to be a protective, loving mom and a sweetheart to anyone who meets her.

THAT’S a good mother!

Okay, so trapped animals aren’t always funny.

In fact, many times, it’s very sad; even tragic.

But every now and then, you come across a story like this…and you just can’t help but laugh.

The holiday season has arrived and as most of us know, it’s wise to moderately partake of the many culinary delights.

We always assume we’ll gain a little weight but we don’t want to go nuts, right?

Well, some animals who have plenty of food at hand don’t have such an “Off” switch, and when that happens, well…

You never know when you might be in a tight spot, in an elevator or in the workaday carpool, and a few extra pounds may put you in an embarrassing situation.

Just ask this chubby raccoon.

Seems he indulged in one too many nightly prowls through the neighborhood, feasting on holiday leftovers. And now the masked raider is stuck!

His holiday heists had put him in a real pickle, as reported by the Zion, Illinois, police.

“It seems this little guy has been eating a little too well and got caught in the sewer grate,” the police reported on their social media account.

Officers were unable to liberate the pitifully cute and chubby critter. So, in another somewhat hilarious move, they called for backup.

A little later, Zion Public Works Department workers were able to free the raccoon and for the fun of it, snapped a few pictures to document the hilarious encounter.

Seems like the best comedies end up having a chunky fellow getting all the laughs, right?

For pet lovers, it’s best to remember that shunning a pooch leads to payback like no other.

For instance, cooler weather may give owners the idea they can leave a dog in a parked car.

But fairer weather or not, dogs don’t like being left alone.

And some of the more intelligent (and spirited!) pups will make their owners pay for the slight every chance they get!

One pooch decided he’d been left alone in the car one too many times, so he immediately took matters into his own hands.

His only goal – publicly shame his owner.

Obviously, this very smart canine paid close attention every time his owner laid into the car horn to get someone’s attention.

And now it was time to draw everyone’s attention to him, sitting in command in the car driver’s seat!

http://addictingstories.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/DogHonksHorn.mp4

One stiff paw and this dog blared the car horn for all to hear, and wasn’t gonna stop until everyone noticed, especially his owner.

A stunned passerby caught the hilarious incident on video at Vancouver Island’s Beban Park on November 19, and the video has since gone crazy viral.

The person recording the video can be heard pleading with the dog to stop the ongoing racket, but nope, this pooch wasn’t listening.

His pleas were met with a steely stare that wasn’t budging.

Take that, fair weather owner!

Cinnamon sat, grief-stricken and alone, in her cage at a North Carolina animal shelter.

Not only was she homeless, she had also lost the puppies she’d just delivered…a very sad story, to say the least.

She was recently rescued from a breeder where all signs showed she delivered many litters, but she never got to play the role of mamma for very long.

And unfortunately, so many animals were being surrendered to the shelter, Cinnamon kept getting passed over and ignored.

But Sarah Sleime, an SPCA volunteer, was visiting the shelter and couldn’t help but notice Cinnamon.

“I just saw this pit bull sitting there, and she was very human-like, slumped over and very solemn,” Sleime said.

“So I bent over and started talking to her.”

Cinnamon responded with a tearful look and made a crying sound as Sleime spoke softly to her. The dog was obviously sad and it didn’t help that she was in poor condition physically.

But for Sarah, she was irresistible.

So, Slieme decided recorded video of the pit bull, then posted it online and it garnered more than 700,000 views from around the world.

Sleime’s friend, Megan Shelton, was taken aback by the incredibly emotional video.

“I have a special place in my heart for pit bulls,” Shelton said.

“I think they’re a very misunderstood dog and a misunderstood breed. And when I saw her in that video, literally crying in a cage, I cried.

My kids cried. I showed my husband, and he said we could go look at her tomorrow.”

Their meeting at the shelter with the crying pit bull was truly meant to be.

As soon as the dog entered the room she immediately connected with Shelton and her kids; the suddenly happy dog sat on their laps and knocked the kids over in excitement.

The family decided to adopt the pit bull, now called Rosie, and they brought her home to meet their other pit bull, Blu.

One big happy family!

http://addictingstories.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/CryingRosieVid.mp4

Rosie now gladly escorts the children to the school bus when she’s not lounging in Shelton’s home office next to her desk, with Blu on the other side.

Rosie and her new family have much to be thankful for these days, and thankful Rosie didn’t stay another day in the shelter.

See? This is why you should always consider adopting, especially in regards to animals who have had an especially rough time.

The Sheltons definitely saved a life here, and you can too!

Who’s the king of the jungle? A lion.

Who’s the king of the paddock where the lion “Bonedigger” lives? Not the lion.

Bonedigger paces his paddock at the Greater Wynnewood Animal Park in Oklahoma where the massive cat calls home.

Bonedigger likes his space and he doesn’t want any outsiders messing with his dominion. He has the roar, the claws and the teeth to ward off any trespassers.

Unless, of course, you are a pint-sized canine of the wiener dog variety. Far from making a meal out of the tiny dogs, they are his best friends!

Bonedigger was housed at the park at a young age where he was introduced to four dachshunds when they were all just a few weeks old.

The king cat took to the smaller of the dachshunds, Abby. While Bonedigger bonded with all the dogs, he was partial to Abby.

This new “pride” grew up together, proving that opposites in the animal kingdom can live together.

It’s a bond that has impressed the animal caretakers and park visitors.

Now the lion is fully grown and any one of the dogs would be gone in one gulp from the apex predator.

But that’s not life in this jungle.

The dachshunds have full run of the lion’s paddock.

“Believe it or not, I think the weenie dogs overpower him,” Bonedigger’s caretaker told the media. “One minute they’ll be running around the house chasing him, and then the next minute he’s chasing them – so they reverse roles.”

Abby especially has her way.

John Reikene, interactive zoo manager at the park, marvels at the bond between Bonedigger and Abby.

“I can’t say that I’ve ever seen anything like this bond,” he said in a media interview. “They’re always just loving on each other.”

“Bonedigger gets along with all four of the wiener dogs,” one park employee said. “But Abby gets away with a lot more.”

Abby and crew can be seen playing and romping together in the pen with Bonedigger.

It’s a quirky, hilarious sight to see as the little dogs race about while the lion treats them as just a member of his pride.

Bonedigger is so loving and protective of his dog pals that he even nips at the dogs’ fleas when lounging together.

But don’t let the cuteness of the serene scene cause you to lose your clarity.

Bonedigger only accepts his canine companions and his caretaker.

Anyone else who disturbs his dominion is fair game.

That’s Bonedigger’s law of his jungle.

For centuries dogs have been protectors of their human companions.

When danger arises, dogs often display heroic efforts to help the humans they love.

Dogs today are regularly tasked into military service where they work, often in harsh environments, to support soldiers who protect the world.

British Special Forces dog, Mali, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, proved his worth to mankind during a dangerous mission in Afghanistan.

A group of heavily-armed suicide bombers was hiding in a multi-story building. Mali was part of a Special Forces unit that in 2012 went after the militants.

During the seven-hour mission, Mali sniffed out explosives and was injured by three grenade blasts.

Most dogs, even their human counterparts, would be done after such an attack.

But not Mali, who persevered through the fiery battle and helped save the lives of several fellow British soldiers.

The key enemy stronghold was secured, and the mission a great success.

Unfortunately, Mali’s injuries from the mission were serious, as his belly, chest, ears and teeth were all injured.

Thankfully, though, after enough time passed, he recovered fully and was then retired from active duty. Job well done!

Most such military sacrifices go unnoticed by the public, but the military wasn’t about to overlook Mali’s bravery:

Mali was chosen for a prestigious honor, one awarded to a select few military animals over the years.

Mali was awarded the Dickin Award from the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA).

In 75 years of the medal’s history, only 31 other dogs have received the award. Other animals include 32 pigeons, four horses and one cat.

Jan McLoughlin, PDSA director general, presented the award to Mali and was quoted:

“Mali has displayed a truly awesome ability and determination to seek out explosives and insurgents during a key operation.

To achieve this while exposed to close combat and such intense enemy attacks makes him an incredibly worthy recipient of the PDSA Dickin Medal.”

Of course, good ol’ Mali is still a dog…

When he received his Dickin Award during the special presentation, he forgot it was for his military service.

He playfully grabbed the medal with his teeth and had a brief tug-of-war with the presenter. Dogs will be dogs!

Anyway, Mali now serves in his retirement as a training dog for the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. He helps new dog handlers hone their skills for future service.

His continued service is certainly appreciated, and his sacrifice in battle one to remember – man or beast.

Beloved pets can easily get themselves into trouble because of their curiosity.

Dogs especially have a tendency to “squirrel;” i.e., run off at the first sign of anything that appears interesting.

And that can get them lost, injured or even killed.

Chloe was with her owner, Larry Osborne, on a walk near their home in Mount Bross, Colorado.

Something caught Chloe’s attention and the next thing her owner knew she was loose and out of sight.

Chloe, 14, didn’t know the dangers in the area, particularly the nearby “14er.”

A “14er” is a mountain that has a peak at 14,000 feet – and there are 58 such mountain peaks in the state best known for the Rocky Mountains.

Dangerous by themselves, these 14ers are surrounded by peaks and valleys that can send a loose pet literally off a ledge.

Osborne quickly began a search for Chloe but it went nowhere. Minutes turned into hours, hours into days and before he realized it, several weeks had passed.

He knew it was likely that Chloe wasn’t alive, but he kept up a vigil on social media.

Trinity Smith saw a post about Chloe’s plight, and after a few restless nights thinking of the lost dog something in her world began to make sense.

Smith connected Chloe to barking sounds coming from the mountains where she and friends hiked. It was a long shot, but could it be?

She had to know and talked a friend into helping her search the area.

What old dog could survive six weeks alone in the mountains away from food and shelter?

Smith was determined to find out.

She and her friend hiked the mountain trails for two days, calling for the dog she believed could be Chloe.

At first, they didn’t hear anything, and Smith began to lose hope…

Then, a faint bark. Smith walked toward the sound until her hope was rewarded.

There was Chloe, stranded on a ledge where one wrong move or a loose rock would send her falling to sure death.

Smith’s friend, Sean Nichols, was able to get a grip on Chloe and move her to safety.

Chloe was malnourished, sickeningly thin, and they gave the old girl some water before carrying her down the mountain.

The rescuers stopped by a convenience store and the store owner recognized the dog. He called Chloe’s owner with the news.

Osborne was beyond excited as he rushed to retrieve his beloved Chloe.

His tears flowed freely as he sat next to Chloe in utter relief and gratitude. Chloe knew she was safe and wagged her tail in appreciation.

But Chloe isn’t out of the proverbial woods just yet.

She weighed 90 pounds when she got loose, and was down to 26 pounds when she was found.

However, with much deserved love and care, she is on the road to recovery and should be 100% healthy very soon.

Smith and Nichols proved there’s still a lot of humanity in humans, didn’t they?

They took it upon themselves to follow a hunch, have faith and determination, and see a rescue through to the end. Bravo!

As much as we love to believe our pets are like us, there are times when pets just can’t save themselves.

House pets, unlike their wild cousins, don’t maintain a developed skill set for survival away from human companions.

Take that another step, and domestic animals lost in the mountains face numerous threats to their lives.

Any one danger such as sheer cliffs, extreme temperatures, bears, mountain lions or deadly snakes could easily kill a house pet.

A trio of dogs found themselves trapped in a high-mountain danger zone near Wrightwood, California.

The area was remote, nearly 8,000 feet above sea level. The dogs, sisters to one another, were discovered in a canyon not easily accessible.

People tried to rescue the pups for a week, but no luck. The dogs stuck together and, for whatever reason, shied away from humans.

Time was running out because of the elements – temperatures hovering about 20 degrees – and lack of food and water.

Eldad Hagar, head of Los Angeles-based Hope for Paws, knew a rescue was needed.

He gathered fellow volunteers and their rescue trek began. They overcame the rough, mountainous terrain, but ran into another snag:

The dogs were wary of the strangers and avoided attempts at rescue, staying just out of reach.

These dogs just didn’t understand what the rescuers were trying to do for them.

So, what do you do when stuck on a mountainside trying to rescue skittish dogs?

You treat them like wild animals.

The Hope for Paws crew set up a lure with food and a cage with a door that would spring closed like a wild animal trap.

They were successful with one pup and rushed that one to the veterinarian for evaluation and much needed food and water.

Her sisters took more time as they avoided the trap.

Not to be deterred, rescuers stayed the course until all three pups were “captured.”

The trio checked out for good health and were placed with foster families. Thankfully, adoption was in the future for all three.

It’s a heartwarming story with a few gutsy twists and turns, and worth the few minutes to watch the video.

Hang onto your seats for a ride on the wild side as you watch:

You gotta love a family member who pulls a “Mr. Magoo” in public.

It’s the situation where the lovable person mistakes an odd object for something cute, but the object of their affection isn’t really there.

Case in point:

Hannah Murphy was dining with her mom at a lovely outdoor patio bistro when her mom started giggling.

Not the giggle and stop scenario, but all-out giggling like a child who discovered something hilarious in her universe.

Murphy was perplexed as her mom explained between the giggling.

“Take a look at that adorable dachshund,” Murphy’s mom explained as she pointed across the patio.

Her mom pointed at a brown object scrunched against the leg of a chair where a woman sat at a nearby table.

Murphy eyed the “cute” thing, and suddenly burst into laughter.

my mother was giggling at this and told me to “take a look at that adorable dachshund, he’s sleeping”, she was looking at a purse: pic.twitter.com/ZyNKaLMxKI

— Hannah Murphy (@dumb_hannah) July 30, 2017

Not because the “dog” was cute, but because her mom was so gleefully mistaken.

“She was looking at a purse,” Murphy said matter-of-factly in a social media post.

Her mom was giggling at a cute “pup,” when, in fact, it was just a lumpy, brown purse mashed against the chair leg:

The mother-daughter duo had a great time laughing over the mistaken “cuteness.”

Here’s a side-by-side comparison of a cute pup and what this mom really saw:

Murphy’s mom might want to keep her eyeglasses handy.

Her spectacles may keep her from pulling a real “Mr. Magoo” and petting something other than a purse – something that might bite.
