After Nurse Hits Massive $758 Million Jackpot, The World Is Stunned To Hear 1 Tragic Detail

If you hit a jackpot and the odds of winning were about 1 in 292 million, you’re pretty darn lucky.

Some might argue that you’re one of the luckiest human beings in history.

And nurse Mavis Wanczyk was undoubtedly lucky for winning one of the largest lottery jackpots in U.S. history; last week, she won the whopping $758.7 million Powerball.

Yes, her winning ticket was the talk of the town and a seemingly impossible victory.

As it turns out, however, Wanczyk’s sudden stroke of luck follows one tragic event in her life, one which makes her stunning win somewhat bittersweet.

Last November, her ex-husband William was sitting in a bus shelter, waiting for a ride. A normal event; a normal day.

But then a hit-and-run driver slammed into the bus shelter and 55-year-old William never had a chance, as the Massachusetts firefighter died almost instantly.

The driver, a 20-year-old who had been driving extremely recklessly, was brought up on manslaughter charges (and rightfully so), but this of course didn’t bring William back.

And while the two were divorced, Mavis certainly mourned William’s passing. When someone is such a big part of your life for so long, you never stop caring about them, divorce or no divorce.

That was less than 10 months ago and though it didn’t happen to her, it was a terrible piece of bad luck, one that’s obviously at the other end of the luck spectrum.

But now that the veteran nurse of 32 years has about $336 million (the after-taxes amount of her lump sum total of $480 million), perhaps one could say her luck has changed dramatically.

And what is she going to do now? Well, for one, she’s retiring early. After that:

“The first thing I want to do is just sit back and relax,” Wanczyk told The Boston Globe. “I want to just be me and be alone and … figure out what I want to do.”

Let’s hope she lives a long and healthy life so she can enjoy her winnings. This win should be a sign that after tragedy, the sun will be shining down on Mavis for some time.

That is, if you believe in karma and otherworldly things like that. And perhaps now you do…
